Now it's time for us to return the favor. "It may not be as easy as Mom saying
yes to the perfect prom dress or Dad spending nights fixing up that old jalopy, but
we want them to feel that same kind of love. Because of our love for my mother,
we provide the highest quality care. We wanted to create an environment where
she could thrive, not just survive. Today, the memories of happiness she found in
her new surroundings guide the care of each Regent Street resident."

T

he Jewish War Veterans of
Michigan will now maintain
their offices at Temple Beth El
in Bloomfield Township.
Members of the group are the
Michigan affiliates of the Jewish
War Veterans of the United States of
America. Formed in 1896 by Jewish
veterans of the Civil War, it is the old-
est active national service organization
in the country. Statewide, the group
has eight posts; locally, there are 400-
500 members.
Gerald Order is the state com-
mander and Jack Weiss is the national
service officer. Weiss meets with vet-
erans and their families and serves
as the liaison between the Jewish War
Veterans of Michigan and the Veterans
Administration.
Each post elects its state officers
and has its own Ladies Auxiliary,
whose current state president is Myra
Gross.
Harmon Tron, who has served as
the Jewish War Veterans Memorial
Association's president for the past
two years, will maintain daily office
hours at Beth El. He credits Sheldon
Schwartz, a Beth El member and a life
member of the Jewish War Veteran's
Morton A. Silverman post, for sug-
gesting the change of venue and is
appreciative of Executive Director
Tom Jablonski's work to coordinate the
effort. The JWV's previous location
was on Northwestern Highway and
Evergreen in Southfield.
Jan Durecki, archivist and director

of the Temple's Rabbi Leo M. Franklin
Archives, and her intern, Robbie
Terman, have assisted in the move to
Beth El, helping to examine and sort
through numerous documents and
suggesting those that were appropriate
to preserve for historic record.
The Jewish War Veterans' indi-
vidual posts conduct their own
programming; however, groups from
throughout the state visit the Veterans
Hospital in Battle Creek in July for
a picnic and during the Christmas
season when gifts are distributed to
everyone — regardless of their reli-
gion.
The group's only fundraiser, which
is part of a national effort, is the May
Poppy Day sale. Proceeds are used
locally to underwrite a scholarship
program open to any high school
senior, regardless of religion, who has
a family member who is a veteran. The
scholarships will be awarded in June
on Scholarship Night.
Among the other activities the
Jewish War Veterans have planned for
this year, open without charge to the
public, are Brotherhood Night, March
27, at the Oak Park Jewish Community
Center, and Memorial Day Services
at Machpelah and Hebrew Memorial
Cemeteries. In August, they will be the
acting hosts during Veterans Day at
the Michigan State Fair.
For questions or information
regarding the Jewish War Veteran's new
home, contact Harmon Tron, (248)
