Woodward in Ferndale, "Brenda Goodman: New Work," running through April 5, features 11 oil-on- paper paintings Goodman completed from the summer of 2007 to the pres- ent. The New York-based artist, a Detroit native, uses the act of painting as a direct means to communicate her states of being. In one series of six paintings, Goodman forms brushstrokes like notes to create symphonic composi- tions showing the artist in song. In five other works, she utilizes the framework of each painting to set up architectural spaces almost stage-like in appearance. In each, a figure or series of figures (perhaps the artist in multiple roles) appear caught in mid-act. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays. (248) 544- 3020. Oakland University Art Gallery, located in 208 Wilson Hall on the 0- U campus in Rochester, presents an exhibit on a subject frequently in the news. "Revolutionary Cultural Identity: Photography and the Changing Face of Immigration" reflects the grow- ing impact of globalization upon the fabric of American society with the work of a group of 11 photo-based artists, all first- and second-generation immigrants, who ponder the changing nature of identity. French Coquette French President Nicholas Sarkozy, 53, a practicing Catholic whose maternal grandfather was Jewish, is very popular with the worldwide Jewish community for his opposi- tion to domestic anti-Semitism, his clear support of Israel and his tough stand on Iran's nuclear pro- gram. Last year, he divorced his wife (a Catholic whose father was Jewish) and shortly thereafter married Carla Bruni, 40, a beautiful fash- ion model-singer. Bruni's sister recently spoke to the Web site European Jewish Press. She said that her paternal grandfather, an Italian Jew from Turin, converted to Catholicism during World War II and that Carla was born with the family name Tedeschi, a northern Italian name of Jewish origin. Among the group is Rafael Goldchain, a Jewish artist born in Chile who now lives and works in Toronto, and Yuri Marder, the son and grandson of Jewish European refugees whose "Exile Project," begun and inspired by the immigrants of New York, chroni- cles people who live in one language but have their hearts in another. She also was involved with Jean- Paul Enthoven, a French philoso- pher whom she dropped for his son, Raphael.
