Israel Bound

Young adults to mark Birthright.

y

oling Jewish adults ages 18-
26 can travel to Israel this
spring and summer to par-
ticipate in the country's 60th anniver-
sary celebrations on all-expenses-paid,
10-day trips.
The trips are sponsored by Taglit-
Birthright Israel, the program that, by
the end of the summer, will have sent
more than 180,000 Jews from around
the world to Israel — for free.
"Taglit-Birthright Israel is one of
the few programs that have been
proven truly successful at instilling
young unaffiliated Jews with a strong
sense of Jewish awareness and pride
said Shimshon Shoshani, CEO of
Taglit-Birthright Israel. "Few experi-
ences have been as effective at creating
meaningful and lasting bonds between
participants and their Jewish identi-
ties, and none have reached as many.
"Most participants return from the
trip transformed by the experience,
and many go on to play more active
roles in Jewish life and their Jewish
communities
Participants visit archaeological
sites in the Old City of Jerusalem, the

Eat Out, Help Israel
America Eats for Israel is a project run
by high school students in the United
States and Canada. This program,
based out of Yeshivat Rambam of
Baltimore, Md., began four years ago,
with a goal of raising money for tzeda-
kah, or charity, mainly in Israel.
On March 11, three local Detroit res-
taurants will be donating 10 percent
of their profits to Meir Panim, an aid
relief program in Israel that dispenses
food and social services to the needy
via 30 relief centers.
Sara's Deli in the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park; Carvel Ice Cream,
6695 Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield; and Jerusalem Pizza,
26025 Greenfield Road, Southfield, are
participating.
Rachel Brown of Southfield and
Rachel Margolin of Orchard Lake,
two students from the Frankel Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit
in West Bloomfield, have joined the
America Eats For Israel team to help
get Detroit involved in this charitable

project.

ancient fortress Masada and the caves
of Bar Kochba. They go kayaking in the
Jordan River, hiking in the mountains
in Israel's northern region, swimming
in the Dead Sea and cliff rappelling in
Mitzpe Ramon.
Tours of modern Jerusalem and Tel
Aviv and the mystical city of Safed
and Jaffa — the world's oldest port
— highlight how ancient and modern,
religious and secular are juxtaposed in
Israel.
Any post-high school Jewish young
adult, aged 18-26, who has never trav-
eled to Israel on a peer educational trip
or study program, nor lived in Israel
past the age of 12, is eligible to register
for the program, which pays for every-
thing from airfare and accommoda-
tions to entrance fees and meals.
The program's fenders represent a
partnership involving the Israeli gov-
ernment, private philanthropists and
the American Jewish community. ❑

Israel Needs Volunteers
Volunteers for Israel (VFI) says there
is an urgent call for volunteers to work
on special projects in northern and
southern Israel, supporting the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF).
This involves working alongside
Israeli soldiers doing such non-com-
bat jobs as building fortifications and
fences, and assisting with logistical
tasks.
For 25 years, VFI volunteers from
around the world have provided much-
needed manpower on IDF army and
service bases. Volunteers sign-on for
1-3 weeks, and the program provides
free lodging, kosher meals and work
clothes on the bases. Participants are
welcome regardless of their religion.

for Israel Great Lakes Regional
Director Ed Kohl, West Bloomfield
