Purim Fun Planned
Temple Beth El's Purim Celebration in Bloomfield Township
will begin Saturday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m. with Purim Tot
Shabbat, an informal service especially for the younger set,
their parents and grandparents, led by the rabbis, cantor and
educator.
The service will be followed by a 10 a.m. snack and crafts
program focusing on Purim heroes, Esther and Mordechai, vil-
lain Haman and eating hamantaschen.
On Sunday, March 16, the celebration will continue with
the reading of the megillah at 11 a.m. followed by the Young
People's Society's annual Purim Carnival. From noon until 2
p.m., carnival goers can try their skills at a variety of games,
bounce off excess energy in giant inflatables, dance, take a ride
on the bull and enjoy snacks, sandwiches and drinks.
The carnival is open to the community with tickets for food
and booths available at the door.

Purim Fest At JAS
People of all ages will celebrate Purim at Purimfest at 4 p.m.
Sunday, March 9, at the Prentis Jewish Apartments in Oak Park.
Families from the neighboring Young Israel of Oak Park
will join Prentis residents in marking Purim with fun, food
and activities for children and adults to enjoy. Pizza, salad and
hamentashen will be served; and entertainment will include
the new Wii video game, a clown, face painting and Purim
songs and skits.

Share A Sweet Shabbat
Congregation Beth Ahm's special Family Shabbat series for
families with children in grades four through seven will con-
tinue Shabbat, Saturday, March 15, and all are invited.
Shabbat Metukah ("sweet Shabbat") runs for one hour, from
10:30-11:30 a.m. in the chapel. It features an age-appropriate
Shabbat morning service, including a discussion about the
weekly Torah portion, plus a sweet snack.
Shabbat Metukah is open to the community regardless of
synagogue affiliation. Grandparents, other family members
and friends are invited as well as parents and children. Shabbat
Metukah is a special monthly feature of Beth Ahm's regularly
scheduled weekly Junior Congregation, part of the synagogue's
Shabbat morning religious school program. Beth Ahm is in
West Bloomfield.

A Magical Purim
Music and magic will be the entertainment at a Purim party
hosted by the Birmingham-Bloomfield Chai Center on Friday,
March 21.
The evening will also include hors d'oeuvres and a full-
course family-style Friday night dinner, all starting at 6 p.m.
at the Masonic Lodge, 37357 Woodward Avenue, in Bloomfield
Township. Reservations are required.
Joe Greenbaum, a klezmer violinist, will perform at the
party, along with strolling magician and humorist Mark
Amaze. There will also be holiday arts and crafts for children.

Tickets are $25 per adult; $15 for per
teenagers, or $10 per child (5-12). To add

Kadima Fundraiser
Kadima of Southfield will hold its "Healthy Body Healthy
Mind" luncheon 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the
Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.
The fundraiser, in memory of Miya Must, will feature Zonya
Foco, registered dietitian, author of the bestselling Lickety-Split
Meals cookbook and television host of Zonya's Health Bites,
aired locally on WTVS Channel 56. Zonya's presentation is
sponsored by Eden Foods.
The proceeds from the event will benefit Kadima programs
and services that assist those with chronic mental illness.

Understanding Islam
StandWithUs/Michigan will present Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser,
founder of the Phoenix-based American Islamic Forum for
Democracy. He will discuss "Understanding Islamism: The
Ideology Fueling Terrorism" at 8 p.m. Monday, March 10, in the
Kalamazoo Room at the Michigan League, 911 N. University
Ave., Aim Arbor. He also will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March
11, at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills. A
patron pre-glow starts at 6 p.m.
Jasser is a physician and frequent columnist on Islamic
affairs and a contributor on CNN. He believes it is essential for
devoted Muslims to lead the ideological war against militant
Islamism by separating the spiritual from the political.
Co-sponsors are Arnold and Janet Aronoff, Stuart and Cheryl
Israel, Natalio and Rayna Kogan, Jay and Renee Kozlowski, Don
and Rae Sharfman, Zionist Organization of America-Michigan

Adult Retreat Planned
The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for
Jewish Education and the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School
of Detroit will offer a weekend retreat for
adults only at the Butzel Conference Center
in Ortonville, Friday-Sunday, May 2-4.
The theme of the weekend is Israel at 60
and features scholars in residence Dr. Mitch
Parker and Dr. Zohar Raviv.
Sessions include: "On the Possibility of a
Jewish Democracy in Israel"; "The Desert
that Speaks — Israel as Narnia: Entering
M. Zuhdi

Land of Deep Magic"; "The American
Jasser
Declaration of Independence and the Ten
Commandments" ;"The Role of Hebrew in
Classical Judaism: on Decoding God's Vernacular."
Parker is a community educator and instructor for the
Detroit mini-school. Raviv is the 2007-08 scholar in residence
for Chicagoland Jewish High School and Melton scholar in
residence to North America.
The cost is $325 per person based on double occupancy. Pay
