A
got into a gray Honda Accord and
locked himself inside. He started the
car as three witnesses banged on it
and yelled at him to exit. Instead, the
thief drove off, almost hitting his pur-
suers as well as two people just walk-
ing in the lot.
Witnesses did get the license plate
number, which led police to a West
Bloomfield address, but the car was
not there. Soon after, police spotted
the car near Hiller and Commerce
roads and pulled the driver over on
Greer.
thief stole a wallet from an
open locker in the health
club at the West Bloomfield
JCC on Feb. 8, but dropped it as he fled
the building with the victim and staff
in hot pursuit.
The assailant almost hit several
people with his car as he left the park-
ing lot.
One witness got the license plate
number, which led police to the sus-
pect.
No one was hurt and the wallet was
recovered intact.
"All those people chasing the guy
is what led to the suspect being
caught:' said Lt. Carl Fuhs of the West
Bloomfield Police Department. "I'm
glad everybody helped out. It was
good work on their part. Without a
license plate number, we might never
have caught him."
Fuhs gave this account:
At 2:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, a 74-
year-old man was standing near his
open locker when he noticed a young
man next to it.
When the older man returned to his
locker, he noticed his leather wallet
was gone.
The older man then confronted the
younger man, who denied taking the
wallet but then bolted from the locker
room.
The victim chased the thief while
yelling that his wallet had been taken.
Health club employees joined in the
chase.
Amid the excitement, the thief
dropped the wallet but no one imme-
diately noticed that.
In the parking lot, the fleeing man
Suspect Identified
Fuhs identified the suspect as Andrew
Kurtser, 21, of West Bloomfield. He is
charged with two felonies: larceny in a
building and felonious assault. He also
faces a misdemeanor charge of reck-
less driving.
Kurtser is free on bond pending
a March 13 pre-exam conference
in 48th District Court, Bloomfield
Township. A preliminary examination
before District Judge Marc Barron will
be scheduled to determine if there is
sufficient evidence to remand the case
to trial.
Conviction could bring up to five
years in prison on the larceny count
and up to four years on the assault
count.
At a Feb. 9 arraignment, a not-guilty
plea was entered on the defendant's
behalf.
On behalf of the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit,
Marketing Director Suzanne Lichtman
said:
"We regret the incident occurred, but
are pleased that it was resolved quickly.
The owner has his wallet back and the
suspect has been identified."
