Recycle Your Electronics
Temple Beth El and Great Lakes Electronics
Corp. will be collecting old or obsolete
computers and electronics from 9 a.m.-3
p.m. Sunday, March 9, at the temple, 7400
Telegraph Road, Bloomfield Township.
Every year, the volume of old or
obsolete computers and electron-
ics increases dramatically. Many
contain hazardous materials. It
is critical to the environment to keep these materials from landfills and
incinerators. Proper disposal is important.
Items for collection include computers, personal data devices, tele-
phone equipment, TVs, VCRs and other small electronics and house-
hold appliances (under 100 pounds). Refrigerators and air-conditioning
units will not be accepted.
Data deletion is performed on all data storage media to ensure that
the data is not recoverable by any means.
Great Lakes Electronics will prove this opportunity free as a public
service. For additional information, contact Mike Bassirpour, (313) 838-
7000 or mikeb@recycleelectronics.com.

This is the only image in the muse-
um's collection of the boy with the
"beautiful brown eyes" who Anne
Frank recalled as her "one true love
according to a Reuters story.
Frank's Jewish family fled Nazi
Germany in 1933, and settled in Amsterdam. During World War II, the
Nazis occupied the Netherlands and began deporting Jews to the death
camps in 1942. The Frank family hid in a secret annex in a home for
more than two years before they were betrayed and sent to concentra-
tion camps.
In her diary, Anne describes Peter as "the ideal boy: tall, slim and
good-looking, with a serious, quiet and intelligent face ... I was crazy
about his smile, which made him look so boyish and mischievous."
Peter later died in Auschwitz, while Anne died in Bergen-Belsen con-
centration camp in 1945.
Michaelis, now 81, attended a Berlin Jewish school with Schiff in the
1930s, before both families fled the Nazis. When they parted, the boys
exchanged photographs.

How Jews Rank
According to a recently released study by the Pew Forum on Religious
and Public Life, Jews are the highest-earning religious group in the
United States, with 46 percent of the working population earning a six-
digit figure every year.
The only other group to even come close to the average Jewish annu-
al income was the Hindus, with 43 percent earning more than $100,000.
No other group reached even the 30 percent mark, and the overall U.S.
average was only 18 percent earning six-figure digits annually.
Regarding education, Hindus led the U.S. religious groups at 48 per-
cent having done at least some graduate work, while Jews were second,
with 35 percent.
The survey found that Jews were on par with the national averages
for marital status and divorce rates, but that the Jewish birth rate was
the lowest among religious groups, with 72 percent replying they had no
children.
The study also showed that the United States is on the verge of
becoming a minority Protestant country, with only 51 percent of
Americans replying that they are Protestant.
The study polled more than 35,000 Americans age 18 and older.

Kosher's In the Air
Some didn't even know they served it. But after prodding by the Union
of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (OU), the eight major
U.S. airlines have found that they all have kosher meals or snacks avail-
able for their passengers.
The OU Kosher Division asked American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue,
Northwest, United and U.S. Airways to check their offerings.
Northwest is the largest carrier at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, with
75 percent of the flights. A Northwest spokesman told the OU that pas-
sengers on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights can pre-order kosher
meals. The airline also offers some kosher snacks, but "the overwhelm-
ing majority are not , ) ' the OU said.
Its kosher division sent Northwest a list of snack and nut-mix prod-
ucts that are kosher certified. The OU's Rabbi Eliyahu Safran "expressed
confidence that once Northwest reviews the list, the number of kosher
snacks on its flights will increase."

Conservation Tips

Lighting and CFL information:
• Install outdoor automatic timers. Installing a timer can
cut your outdoor lighting energy use by up to half. You will
not have to remember to turn on your outdoor lights in the
evening and off during the day. Or consider utilizing motion
detectors that switch on automatically when people or wild-
life move close to them and switch off after a few minutes.
• Keep bulbs and light fixtures clean. Dirty fixtures can
reduce light intensity by as much as 25 percent.
• Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
• Light-colored walls will reduce the amount of light needed.
• Use skylights and natural lighting whenever possible to
allow the sun to provide your light.

Jewish Thought on the Environment:

"The Earth is God's, and the fullness thereof; the settled land,
and its inhabitants." Psalm 24:1
