is quite clear that U-M is becom-
ing known among those who hate
Israel as a safe haven to legitimize
activist anti-Israel polemics and
anti-Semitic rhetoric.
It is becoming clear that the
university and President Mary Sue
Coleman need to publicly condemn
anti-Semitism in any form and
clarify that U-M will not condone
nor endorse hatred for Jews and
Judaism masked as criticism of
Israeli policies.
The University of Michigan bene-
fits enormously from the generosity
of the Jewish community. The U-M
Press contract legitimizes Pluto
Press and thus its vicious anti-
Israel rhetoric and anti-Semitism,
and further undermines the very
hope for responsible and informed
discussion about Israel. The Jewish
community needs to continue to
communicate its displeasure with
the university until real changes are
made. L

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
A report commissioned by the
United Nations Human Rights
Council says Palestinian terror-
ism is an inevitable consequence
of Israeli acts, which are consis-
tent with colonialism, apartheid
and occupation.

The Answer
That body has been widely
criticized — even by its founder,
former U.N. Secretary-General
Kofi Annan — for spending
most of its time criticizing one
government, Israel's, over alleged
abuses. This latest report's bias
and vitriol will only encourage
terrorism against innocents and
inflame hatred.
