Dear
Barb, n-
derstand that
March is Na-
-
tional Nutrition
Month. What
does that mean? Thanks, Margo.

A

rmver Dear Margo, Na-
tional Nutrition Month is
sponsored by the Ameri-
can Dietetic Association (ADA)
to emphasize the importance of
informed food choices and sound
eating and physical activity habits.
The ADA is the national profes-
sional organization that certifies
Registered Dietitians.

According to the Public Health
Service (PHS), the history of
professional dietitians/nutritionists
in the U.S. can be traced to the late
1800s, when the nourishment
of hospitalized patients was
supervised by local hospital
stewards. By 1902, prepa-
ration and food services
'
i!) were the responsibility
, of hospital pharmacists.
Thereafter, the impor-
, 1
t 1, ) 7 tance of nutrition and
'
dietetics grew quickly.

In 1919, driven by the
need to properly care for
World War I seamen, the
first dietetic section for
hospitals was organized by the
PHS. It wasn't until 1945, however
(again, spurred by wartime experi-
ence), that the first ADA-approved
dietetic internship was established
to foster the teaching of science-
based dietetics. National Nutrition
Month was first established in 1973
(as National Nutrition Week). The
rest, as they say, is history.
