Dr. Larry Brilliant, Brandeis AZA (1959-62), has been named as the head of Google.org's philanthropic arm. Dr. Brilliant is a former high- tech executive and, as a doctor, has specialized in global health issues. He helped direct efforts to eradicate smallpox from India in the 1970's and served as a bioterrorism consultant to the U.S.'s Center for Disease Control after the 9/11 attacks. Steve Rotenberg, Beber AZA (1976-80), is serving as the inaugural president of the David L. Bittker Unit of B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region. The unit for young, married couples was formed in honor of the former B'nai B'rith leader, who spent many years as a booster of both BBYO and Hillel. Eddie Benyas, Hart AZA (1977-81), is Music Director of the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Music Director Designate of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and founder and Artistic Director of the Southern Illinois Music Festival. In 2005, he was named Conductor of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. Eddie also enjoys an active career as an oboe and English horn player, having performed with the Chicago Symphony under Daniel Barenboim and the Lyric Opera under Zubin Mehta. Eddie lives in Carbondale, Illinois, where he is Professor of Oboe and Conducting at the School of Music of Southern Illinois University. Elon holds a Master's Degree in Accounting from MSU and works as an international tax consultant at Price Waterhouse Coopers, while Pam graduated from EMU and is an elementary education teacher in the Walled Lake School District. Jason Porth, Jolson AZA (1987-92), is serving as Associate Director of Government Affairs and Community Relations at San Francisco State University. Jason is a former Michigan Region Aleph Godol and AZA Grand Aleph Godol. Amanda Niskar, Shira BBG (1985-89), made aliyah to Israel with her mother, Joanne, in September 2005. Amanda earned her Doctorate in Public Health as a Public Health Leadership Fellow at the University of North Carolina and is working on building environmental public health efforts in Israel at the Ministry of Health. Eric Norber, Akiba/Ruach/Jolson AZAs (1981-85), is living near downtown Orlando, Florida, where he is an independent corporate pilot flying private business jets but also is involved in the Jewish community. Eric serves on the Board of Directors of the JCC, on the Budget and Allocations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando, and is the co-Chairman of the Federation's Young Adult Division. Oren Goldenberg, Sammy AZA (1997-2001), won the Michigan Vue Best Michigan Filmmaker Award and was one of six winners of the Audience Choice Award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival for his film, "Finding the Third Circle." Oren majored in Film and Video Studies at the University of Michigan. Achayot BBG(1995-99), graduated from Rachel Williams, Northwestern University School of Law and is practicing in Chicago at McDermott, Will & Emery. She married Daniel Aaronson of Lynnfield, MA, at Cong. Shaarey Zedek in August 2006. Dr. Joshua Berris, Samson AZA (1990-94), has joined the medical staff at Botsford General Hospital's Anesthesia Department in Farmington Hills. He is certified in advanced cardiac life support and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Josh is a former Great Lakes AZA Council Aleph S'gan. Allison (Sweet) Grant, Ahavah BBG (1993-97), has earned her third degree from the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan. She now holds a Master's Degree as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, along with a Master of Science in Nursing Business and Health Care Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Allison is a former Great Lakes BBG Council N'siah. David Walt, Akiba AZA (1968-71), the Robinson Professor of Chemistry at Tufts University, was named in April 2006 as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute professor. He will receive a $1 million grant from HHMI to advance innovation in undergraduate science teaching. The Walt Laboratory at Tufts is world-renowned for its pioneering work that applies micro and nanotechnology to urgent biological problems. Dave is a former Aleph Godol of the Greater Detroit AZA Council. Jonathan Aaron, Rose AZA (1981-85), is currently serving as the Assistant to the President of Guardian Industries Corp. Jon is very active in the community, serving as a member of the Jewish Federation's Board of Governors, both the National and Regional Boards of ADL, the Board of Overseers of The Jewish Theological Seminary - Davidson Graduate School of Education, University of Michigan Hillel, the Detroit Chapter of the American Society for Technion, and the Weitzman Institute. Karen (Rhodes) Rader, Dalyah BBG (1974-76), is the director of the Israel Experience Center at the Central Agency for Jewish Education in St Louis. In that capacity, she coordinates the community-wide Yom Ha'atzmaut celebration and annual Jewish College Fair. Dr. Elissa Gartenberg, Disraeli & Shira BBG's (1983-87), has completed her residency at the Mayo Clinic in family practice and has opened a practice in Clarkston. Dr. Jeffrey Taub, Herzl AZA (1976-81), who currently holds the Ring Screw Textron Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cancer Research at Children's Hospital of Michigan, was awarded a $384,000 grant from the Fremont, Michigan-based Gerber Foundation for a three-year research project on why acute lymphoblastic leukemia is two to three times more common in Caucasian than African American children. He is Kenan Eminent Professor of Political Ethics in the Political Science Department at the University of North Carolina. - Todd Stearn, Samson AZA (1983-87), managing partner with Dailey Stearn law firm and cohost of "The Law Show" on WJR-AM (760), won a seat on the Beverly Hills Village Council for a 2-year term. Todd was also unanimously elected President of the Council. Dr. Marc Shulman, Kishon AZA (1973-77), is serving as the head physician for the athletic program at Iowa State University.
