St. Louis Honors

JWI bowlers strike gold in Missouri.

Steve Stein

Special to The Jewish News

A

s usual, Detroit Jewish
Women International bowl-
ers made their mark on the
JWI Mid-America Bowling Association
tournament.
Detroit JWI's Hallie-Lu-Yas rolled
the team high game (1,138 including
handicap), the Bowling Queens had
the second-highest team series (6,223
including handicap) and nine individu-
als also won awards at the 60th annual
tournament, held Feb. 8-10 in St. Louis.
Joining captain Annette Rubinstein
on the Hallie-Lu-Yas were Carolyn
Fine, Andrea Reid, Carol Shapiro and
Hallie Serling. Dena Wein was captain
of the Bowling Queens. Other team
members were Debbie Wein, Sherri
Kass, Aida Cutler and Soralee Broida.
Six of Detroit JWI's individual awards
came in the A Division (minimum 130

Nothing Fishy
Some bowlers will tell you it's more
difficult to roll an 800 series than
a 300 game. B'nai B'rith bowler
Barry Fishman of Bloomfield
Hills achieved the 800 feat Feb. 14
in the Pisgah League, rolling 247-
289-267/803 at Country Lanes in
Farmington Hills.
Fishman's first 800 is especially
impressive because he's been bowling
in pain for several weeks since suffering
a broken rib.
"My doctor told me to rest for four to
six weeks, but I've bowled every week
because I'm bowling in the B'nai B'rith
International Tournament (March 14-
16 in Columbus, Ohio) and its impor-
tant to keep your timing and form
when you bowl at a high level," Fishman
said.
He started thinking about an 800
series after his 289 second game.
He began his third game with two
strikes, then a 7-pin spare. Fishman
followed with seven consecutive
strikes.
Even though he left another 7-pin in
the 11th frame, Fishman had his 800
series.
"Everyone came over and con-
gratulated me.:' said Fishman, who also
owns the high series this season in the
Brotherhood League (755).
"It was a night I won't forget."

average.) Fine was first in all-events
net (actual 1016 for six games); Broida
and Wein were first and second in high
series net (530 and 524); Janet Sigmon
and Cidnie Herold were first and sec-
ond in high game net (200 and 196);
and Reid was first in high game gross
(264 including handicap).
In the B Division (129 average and
lower), Geri Feldman was first in all-
events net (911); Gert Feldman was
second in high game net (176); and
Amy Rosender was first in high game
gross (252.)
There were 31 teams and 150 bowl-
ers in St. Louis, including eight teams
and 40 bowlers from Detroit, which
is hosting the 2009 JWI Mid-America
tournament. It will be held Feb. 13-15 at
Novi Bowl.
Detroit JWI's annual city tourna-
ment will be March 22-23 at Langan's
Norwest Lanes in Farmington Hills.
