better prepared to resist social pressures
to engage in dangerous behaviors typi-
cally found on college campuses, such
as binge drinking. An analysis of com-
parison groups — from both public and
private schools — indicate that these
choices cannot be the result of their
family values alone.

Hillel Efforts
At Hillel Day School, parents who
doubt their ability to pay full tuition
are encouraged to apply for tuition
assistance —even those who have never
applied in prior years. The other day
schools in our community encourage
the same. For those individuals in our
community blessed with economic
security, they must step forward and
contribute to scholarship funds that
provide tuition assistance at our various
day schools. At Hillel, over 33 percent of
our student body — the equivalent of
one of every three students in each class
— attends only because of the assis-
tance provided.
The magnitude of each family to
choose a day school education for their
children will directly impact and have
lasting implications for Jewish continu-
ity — both for each individual family
and for the Jewish community — as a
Jewish day school education is no less
than the most critical benefactor that
can help secure our children's and their
children's Jewish future.
We can no longer depend on others to
maintain a Jewish people that many take
for granted. More than ever, we all must
do whatever we can to enlighten other
parents to the benefits of a day school
education, and to encourage family and
friends to send their children to Jewish
day schools. Together, we can make a
difference. ❑

Probabilities
The most striking difference between
these two groups was the degree of the
students' commitment to Jewish life, on
both a personal and on a communal
level. The values, priorities and interests
they display demonstrate the long-term
value of their parents' day school choice.
Numerous previous studies have
shown that a Jewish day school offers
children the greatest probability that:
•they will marry Jews (ensuring
that our grandchildren will be Jewish,
providing continuity from generation to
generation)
•they will be future leaders of the
Jewish community
•they will maintain strong ties to
their Jewish identity and traditions
•they will visit and support Israel and
world Jewry
•they will respond to social causes in
both the Jewish and larger communities.
These facts should be convincing
enough to fill each of Detroit's Jewish
day schools. Undoubtedly, however,
financial concerns do play a role, mak-
ing the decision more agonizing and
complicated for many.
Detroit's economy has, unarguably,
created greater financial challenges, and

The German jihadists thwarted in
Ulm provide another dangerous indica-
tion that Islamic extremism, with Nazi-
style anti-Semitism and fanaticism at
core, is a phenomenon reaching into the
heartland of even the world's most lib-
eral democracies. Like those elsewhere,
their eager martyrdom is as false as the
unintentional martyrdom of the White
Rose was true.
The United States is the world's great-
est democracy — but even here, as
everywhere, we need to remember that
democracy is fragile. Given the damage
it has suffered by the Bush administra-
tion, all U.S. citizens entering the voting
booth on Nov. 4 must remember what
the White Rose said in one of their
leaflets about "civilized nations": "Don't
forget that every people gets the govern-
ment it deserves!"
