Hospice Event Aids
Staffers In Need

H

ospice of Michigan home
health aides Karen Gordon
and Ernestine Smith will
benefit from proceeds raised from a
spaghetti dinner 6-9 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 23, at First Baptist Church of
Royal Oak, 209 N. Main.
Staff members are helping finan-
cially but wanted to host this spaghetti
dinner to bring more support to these
working women who give of them-
selves so faithfully in their day-to-day
work with hospice patients, while
dealing with tragic events at home.
As a home health aide for the
Hospice of Michigan Oakland team,
Beverly Hills resident and single par-
ent Karen Gordon is in need of finan-
cial help after her 16-year-old son was
recently shot during a random rob-
bery. Karen's son was paralyzed from
the incident and will spend the rest
of his life in a wheelchair, dependent
on his family for support. The Gordon
family needs to relocate because their
current home is not wheelchair com-

patible.
Detroit resident and single parent
Ernestine Smith is also a home health
aide for the Oakland team. Ernestine
recently lost her 20-year-old son in a
tragic accidental shooting. While pay-
ing for funeral expenses, Ernestine
is finding it very difficult to meet her
financial obligations.
The spaghetti dinner fundraiser is
open to the public and will include
dinner and a 50-50 raffle. Musical
entertainment will be provided by
Detroit's Bushnell Congregational
Church assistant pastor and flutist
Eric Joier.
Tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for
children ages 6-12; free for children
younger than 5. Call Cheryl Bissett,
R.N., case manager for HOM's
Oakland team, (248) 939-6427, for
ticket information.
Hospice of Michigan provides com-
prehensive comfort care to people
living with a terminal illness and sup-
port to their families.

A

start-up company is devel-
oping a novel, non-inva-
sive device for detecting
early-stage respiratory irregularities
in premature babies, children and
adults receiving ICU care. Known as
Pneumedicare, the company — which
evolved from an award-winning
project carried out by undergradu-
ates at the Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology — began operations in
Israel five months ago.
The device can immediately detect
deterioration in lung ventilation and
the development of common problems
in ICU patients, such as partial block-
age of the air passages or ventilation
from only one lung. It also detects
less-common but still life-threatening
complications such as the accumula-
tion of air between the lungs and
chest cavity walls. Early detection of
such problems reduces the risks of
complications, damage to vital organs
and irreversible brain damage.

devices do not directly monitor chest
cavity mechanics. As a result, up to
six hours can elapse before medical
personnel detect respiratory problems
— often when the patient is already
exhibiting signs of distress.
"Our device monitors respiration
mechanics:' explains CEO Dr. Carmit
Levy, who is also a lecturer at the
Technion. "We place external sensors
on the sides of the chest and the upper
part of the stomach of a premature
baby on a respirator. By doing so,
we can monitor lack of symmetry
between the two lungs and the devel-
opment of mechanical disturbances in
lung ventilation."
According to U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services statistics,
more than 245,000 babies per year
in the U.S. are put on respirators, and
estimates from the National Center for
Health Statistics put the cost of ICU
care for premature babies in the U.S.
at more than $15 billion annually.
Clinical trials are now under way
at the Carmel Medical Center in
Haifa.
