Business I coming home Russian Roots Jewish community a lure for returning attorney. Robert A. Sklar Editor L enny Feller's parents wanted their two sons to be raised in a place where they openly could be Jewish and practice Judaism. So they left the Soviet Union in January 1980. Lenny was 31/2. Arriving in Detroit from Kiev, Ukraine, the family enjoyed the kinds of Jewish experiences that were unimaginable in their native land — hosting a seder, attending religious services, participating in youth activities. "Having a bar mitzvah in Kiev — which nowadays is too often considered a burden or, at best, an excuse for a party —was a privilege and a blessing," said Feller, now 31. Today, Feller is an assistant U.S. attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice for the Eastern District of Michigan. He pros- ecutes violent crime, child exploitation, white-collar offenses and immigration violations. In 2000, Feller earned a law degree from Harvard University, where he edited the Journal of Law and Public Policy. He then spent a year in Cincinnati clerking for Judge David A. Nelson on the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Later, he joined the Chicago law firm Kirkland & Ellis while his wife, Lisa, worked toward a master's degree in clini- cal psychology. He represented General Motors in the Oldsmobile phase-out litigation. Other clients included 3M, BP, ExxonMobil, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and United Airlines. Feller also was named special assistant attorney general to rep- resent Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in death-penalty litigation. "The opportunity to serve in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit and the need to be closer to family after my wife and I had children brought us back to Detroit:' said the father of two. Detroit-based U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy hired Feller. "Hiring terrific lawyers like Lenny contributes to the development and shepherding of our office's most importance resources — our human resources:' Murphy said. "I am sin- cerely delighted to think that lawyers of Lenny's caliber would want to join the highly proficient staff of attorneys and legal pro- fessionals already here in Detroit!'
