Ann Arbor
tudents of different religious
faiths are set to follow some
common ideals far beyond
their school's campus.
In a first-ever collaboration of
the University of Michigan's cam-
pus Hillel and the
Muslim Students'
Association, 18 stu-
dents — nine from
each group — will
travel more than
1,000 miles together
later this month.
The goal is to assist
Afrah Raza
individuals in New
Orleans and the Gulf
region still suffering
in the aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina.
"This trip cel-
ebrates a value
shared between both
Muslims and Jews
Miriam Liebman to help those less
fortunate and to do
our part in repairing
the world, or tikkun
olam, as I learned to
say in Hebrew:' said
Sarah Jukaku, a 21-
year-old member of
the Muslim group.
Rabbi Martin
Rabbi Nathan
Martin, an assistant
director at U-M
Hillel, proposed and will lead the trip.
"The imperative to give of oneself
for others and for the community is
deeply embedded in both Jewish and
Muslim tradition;' he said.
The group will spend spring break,
Feb. 24-March 2, volunteering in the
rebuilding effort.
"The aim of our project is to have
the two groups be able to physically
work and build something together to
show what we can accomplish when
we work together:' said Hillel's Miriam
Liebman, 21, of Farmington Hills, stu-
dent co-chair along with Afrah Raza,
19, of Grosse Pointe, a member of the
Muslim group. Imam Radwan Mardini

of Dearborn also will travel with the
students.
The group will volunteer with an
organization called Beacon of Hope
to clean up homes and yards to make
them more habitable. They also will
help clean up and re-plant City Park,
the largest park in New Orleans, and
work with a rebuilding project orga-
nized by a non-profit called Relief
Spark.
"We see what happened in New
Orleans as a tragedy:' Liebman said.
"We feel we can help make social
change by working together as an
interfaith group to build relationships
and overcome preconceived notions
or stereotypes of one another. And in
doing our work, not only are we help-
ing ourselves but we are reaching out
to others in need:"

Together In Learning
In preparation for the trip, partici-
pants are nearing the end of 10 weekly
assemblies. They have met "to engage
in dialogue and group-building activi-
ties so that the students become much
more connected to each other before
the trip, develop stronger relation-
ships, and further break down barriers
and stereotypes of each other:' Rabbi
Martin said.
"Each week, a Jewish-Muslim stu-
dent pair lead some type of interactive
ice-breaker or dialogue session for the
group as well as taking time during
the meetings to learn more about each
other's faith tradition and about the
