In 1967, he joined the
Perfection Masonic Lodge No.
486 and served as master in
1974.
He joined the Valley of
Detroit Scottish Rite Masons in
1971 and served as Sovereign
Prince, Carson Council Princes
of Jerusalem. In 1980, he
became an honorary mem-
ber of the Supreme Council
and attained the rank of 33rd
degree Mason. He was on the
Valley's board of trustees from
1993 to 1995 and from 1998
to 2001, serving as president
in 1998. He was also president
of the board of trustees of the
Michigan Masonic Home in
Alma. The 345th Reunion Class
of the Valley of Detroit was
named in his honor for his dis-
tinguished history as veteran,
public servant and Mason.
Until the time of his
death, he was serving on the
board of directors of MPRO,
the Michigan Peer Review
Organization, dealing with
medical education for the
elderly and handling medical
appeals of Medicare patients in
the state.
He was also on the Beaumont
Hospital Patient Advisory
Board.
In recognition of his distin-
guished career in both military
and public service, June 20
was officially declared Bernard
H. Zaffern day in the city of
Southfield through proclama-
tion of the mayor and council.
Mr. Zaffern is survived by
his wife of 63 years, Edith;
sons, Joseph Zaffern of
Southfield, David Zaffern of
West Bloomfield; daughter and
son-in-law, Barbara and Mark
Picklo of Bloomfield Hills.
Mr. Zaffern was the loving
brother of the late Lila Taylor;
loving brother-in-law of the late
Joseph Taylor.

charity of one's choice.
