Kadima has long provided residential treatment and support services
to adults with mental illness. Several years ago, the Kadima Youth
Initiative was created with a grant by the Jewish Fund, to respond to the
obvious need for increased advocacy for children locally and throughout
our state. The Youth Initiative has focused on the need for suicide preven-
tion programs on college campuses (including the passage of a statu-
tory mandate), secured funding for a support and advocacy program
for parents of children with emotional disorders, and, most recently,
sponsored an all-day conference at Oakland University, entitled "When
Mental Illness First Appears: Advocating for our Youth At Risk." The
Kadima Youth Initiative is now planning a community wide educational
evening about mental illness with the showing of the award winning
film "Canvas" on May 15th at 7:00 PM at the Congregation Shaarey
Zedek B'nai Israel Center, 4200 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield.
Starring Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden and Emmy Award
winner Joe Pantoliano, "Canvas" explores mental illness through the eyes
of a child, as he learns to cope with his mother's schizophrenia and the
effect it has on his family. The movie's uplifting and sometimes even
humorous tone illustrates how from tragedy springs hope, growth and
understanding!! Please come join Kadima for an evening of education
about mental illness and how it impacts the family. This event is chaired
by Jen Lewis and Melissa Shulman, Kadima board members. Dr. Elliot
Luby will join us after the movie to answer your questions about mental
illness. There will be an afterglow following the film, sponsored by

The Kadima Youth Initiative is also form-
ing a new Kadima Advisory Council on
Youth. The purpose of the Council is to assist
in identifying and prioritizing direct service
projects and public policy issues impor-
tant to the children of Oakland County,
Gail Katz, President
our Detroit Metro Region, and the State
of Michigan. The Council is set to meet in
February to examine individual advocacy assistance for children in need
of appropriate mental health and/or school services, expanded parent
support activities, youth awareness projects on mental health, stigma and
suicide prevention, increased mental health funding for children, efforts to
provide mental health services to children in foster care in Michigan, and
collaboration with the legal community on juvenile justice issues. I look
forward to sharing with you later on in 2008 the progress this exciting
Kadima Advisory Council on Youth has made in helping to turn around
the deplorable state of children's mental health services in Michigan.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
KADIMA

Kadima is proud to announce that, thanks to the very gener-

ous support of our donors, we have been able to max out on the
matching opportunity offered by the Community Foundation for
Southeast Michigan. We were the third organization to raise the
maximum allowed ahead of 84 other non-profits still frying to
reach the max. This effort to increase our endowment by one addi-
tional dollar for every two received in our Operational Endowment
Fund gives Kadima a boost as we creep toward reaching our $10
million goal. For further information as to how you can help secure
Kadima's future, please call Doris at 248-559-8235, Ext. 118.

KADIMA LAUNCHES
