Julie & Robert Greenfield wanted

Janet Marie and m' Archibald's
Imagination Celebration

to start a family but instead found
themselves battling infertility. Doctors
gave the couple a 20% chance of
conceiving a child, and within a year
the percentage would shrink to 5%.
"The emotional, physical and financial
stress was overwhelming," Julie said.

Even with insurance coverage, the
Greenfields faced $40,000 in non-
covered fertility treatments and a
ticking clock. Hebrew Free Loan
helped pay part of the costs and the
Greenfields were soon joined by
twins Freddie and James, now 2.
"It takes a village to raise a family,
but in our case it took a village to
conceive one," Julie said.

Arab Population Soars
Jerusalem/JTA — The Palestinian
population in the West Bank, Gaza
Strip and east Jerusalem has grown
30 percent over the past decade, a
census found.
The Palestinian Authority's
Central Bureau of Statistics, hav-
ing completed its first census in a
decade, announced Saturday that
the Palestinian population stands at
3.76 million, up from 2.89 million in
1997.
The figures could bolster
Palestinian Authority demands for
Israel, which quit Gaza in 2005, to
cede large parts of the West Bank
and even east Jerusalem under
peace talks that were revived in
November.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud
Olmert, like his predecessor Ariel
Sharon, argues that a growing
Palestinian population in the ter-
ritories, as well as a relatively high
birth rate among Israel's Arab citi-
zens, poses a "demographic threat" to
the Jewish state. The answer to this
threat, Olmert says, is a Palestinian
state.
Israeli demographers in the past
have accused Palestinian census tak-
ers of inflating population figures for
the sake of political gain. There was
no immediate Israeli response to the
latest census.
Israel's population of 7.2 million is
80 percent Jewish and approximately
20 percent Arab. Palestinians say they
have as many as 4 million compatri-
ots living abroad as "exiled refugees"
and who also stake a claim in future
nationhood.

Gay Adoption Expanded
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel expanded
criteria for adoption by gay couples.
Attorney General Menachem
Mazuz announced Sunday that same-
sex couples in Israel will be extended
the same adoption rights as hetero-
sexual couples.
Gay men and women previously
were allowed to adopt only if the
child in question was the partner's
biological offspring.
"It was decided that there is no
legal hindrance to allowing same-sex
couples, or one of the partners, to
adopt an unrelated child who is not
the child of either partner:' a Justice
Ministry statement said.
The ministry added that specific
adoptions would still be subject to
the approval of Israel's social ser-
vices.
