JFK's Words On Immigration
To stimulate wider understanding of immigration policy among high
school students, the Anti-Defamation League is promoting a new dis-
cussion guide to accompany A Nation of Immigrants, President John
R Kennedy's landmark essay. The essay has just been reissued with a
new introduction by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and foreword
by Abraham H. Foxman, the ADL's New York-based national director.
The guide provides lessons and ideas suitable for the secondary-
level classroom. It includes tools to guide student reading, facilitate
discussion and build critical thinking skills.
"This guide is an invaluable teaching tool that will enhance class-
room discussion about an important and timely topic:' Foxman said.
"It is especially important today, as anti-immigrant, xenophobic senti-
ments have entered the mainstream discourse, and while students
attend increasingly diverse schools.
"It is critical for our youth to have a thorough understanding of
immigration issues and to appreciate the important role immigrants
play in our country's past, present and future!'
Immigration policies grabbed headlines when A Nation of
Immigrants was first published in 1958; Kennedy was a U.S. senator
and had been asked to draft the essay by the ADL
A Nation of Immigrants is available for purchase on the ADL Web
site: www.adl.org/immigrants.

School Chief To Retire
West Bloomfield School District Superintendent Gary Faber will retire
at the end of this school year. He broke the news to his staff in the
6,626-student district on Jan. 29.
Dr. Faber joined the district as a high school principal in 1983.
Under his leadership, the state twice named West Bloomfield an
exemplary school!" The school also twice received
"national exemplary school" honors.
Faber, 60, was Michigan's Principal of the Year
in 1992.
In 2006, the local Race Relations and Diversity
Task Force designated Faber a "Diversity
Champion." He earned the Southfield-based
Dove Institute's Dove Award in 1999. The John E
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named
Dr. Faber
him 1 of 5 "Outstanding Principals" nationally.
Faber also was cited among 10 principals nation-
wide by the National Center of School Safety.
In 2006-2007, the Michigan School Administrators Association
named Faber "Superintendent of the Year" for the tri-county area.
He's now legislative liaison representing 86 school districts in Wayne,
Oakland and Macomb counties.
