littering strings of mirrors hung from the ceiling of
the Great Hall at the Detroit Institute of Arts, casting
glints of light that looked like sparkling snowflakes
that never reached the ground. The steady beat of conga drums
and electronic music, provided by Division X Records, created a
club atmosphere inside the art museum Jan. 24 while about 225
20- and 30-somethings mixed and mingled: -

Woods and Founder's Junior Council member Niki Johnson. "We're just happy to be
doing this again to get young people down to the DIA and keep the trend going."
Partygoers, in modern chic attire, enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, an open bar and a private
showing of the "City Strings" exhibit featuring the work of Julie Mehretu. The Ethiopian-
born artist was raised and educated in Michigan and Rhode Island. The crowd took
turns strolling through the exhibit, enjoying her large, abstract paintings.
"Her art deals with different cultures in kind of a stadium, geographical setting,"
Shulman explained. "There are a lot of layers to her work. It's very multilayered and mul-
ticultural."
Spotted in the DIA crowd were: Shayna Levine, Lindsay Maddin, Steve Ingber,
Lowell Friedman and Jason Wine, all of Huntington Woods; Kate Bush of Detroit;
Shane Gober of Clinton Township; Jason Trompeter and Jodi Field, both of Royal
Oak; Andrea Belen of Berkley; Stephanie Sasson, Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny and Marla
Kaftan, all of Birmingham; and Margaret Pensler of Bloomfield Hills. ❑
