Dr. David

McAree of Hospice of
Michigan knows well how to provide
traditional medical services for end-of-life
patients. But he's learned more than he
ever could have imagined about faith,
social and emotional support from his
close relationship with Jewish Hospice &
Chaplaincy Network staff and volunteers.

"I wish other ethnic and religious
communities would do what the Jewish
community does through Jewish Hospice
& Chaplaincy Network," Dr. McAree
says. "They give our patients twice the
services by adding the Jewish component
to hospice care."

he was a classically trained
pianist and a champion
of community causes, but
most of all, Lina L. Small, even at 97,
was the matriarch of a large, close-
knit family.
"Nana was the go-to person, the
one to call if you needed advice,
wanted to share a secret or just
wanted to talk:' said granddaughter
Lisa S. Small of Palm Beach, Fla.
"She was always there for us:"
Mrs. Small was a recognized
Jewish communal leader who
received several local awards,
including Woman Volunteer of the
Year while serving as sisterhood
president at Temple
Israel in Detroit/West
Bloomfield. She and
her husband, Irv, were
among the founding
families of that syna-
gogue in 1941.
Mrs. Small also
served as president
of the Detroit Home
Relief Society, the
League of Jewish
Lina Small
Women and the
Detroit Roundtable of
Christians and Jews.
Mrs. Small received the United
Foundation's coveted Heart of Gold
award for her outstanding volun-
teer work. In a 1979 Detroit Free
Press article titled "Togetherness in
Giving," celebrating her and Irv's
50th wedding anniversary, she
said: "When I find someone who
is troubled or bored with life, I tell
them to come along with me, to go
out and work for others who need
them. In that way, they will be help-
ing themselves.
"You get out of life what you put
into it. That's where you'll find inner
happiness."
Mrs. Small died Jan. 28, 2008, in
West Palm Beach, Fla., after a brief
illness. She and Iry were married 72
years. They moved from Southfield
to West Palm Beach in 1984. Iry
died in 2001.
After moving to Yorktown
Condominium in West Palm Beach,
Mrs. Small became affectionately
known as the "Duchess of Yorktown"
since she was the oldest resident yet
still very neighborly and caring and
sought out for advice.

Born Lina L. Lebowsky on July 13,
1910, she was the first-born daugh-
ter of Joseph and Bessie Lebowsky
in Owosso. She became a classically
trained pianist who graduated from
the Detroit Conservatory of Music.
Mrs. Small played piano through-
out her life, often playing while her
beloved Irv, who had an excellent
voice, sang. Most recently, Mrs.
Small continued to play piano with
her great-granddaughters, who lov-
ingly called her the "greatest:'
