A

lmost as many volunteers
turned out at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek's
"Souperbowl" as the group of home-
less individuals they came to welcome
on Sunday, Feb. 3.
It was dark when they arrived at the
synagogue's Southfield location in the
morning and dark when they left. But
at end of the activity-filled day, the
third annual event had provided an
atmosphere of warmth, both in tem-
perature and in camaraderie.
The 250 homeless guests enjoyed
immediate necessities like meals for
the day as well as the longer-lasting
gift of a bag with donated items that
included toiletries, hats and gloves.
Shaarey Zedek's religious school and
nursery school students brought in
socks and T-shirts.
In addition to work done in prepa-
ration for the event, some of the 225

volunteers of all ages helped cook and
serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, set
up games and spent time chatting
with guests.
"We had a large screen to watch
DVDs, bingo, and a moon walk for
the children, and we rented Xbox
and PlayStation 2 (video game sys-
tems) for the teenagers:' said Tobye
Bello, Shaarey Zedek's program
director.
"Besides the three meals, we had
popcorn and cotton candy, lots of pas-
tries, cookies and brownies:"
The visitors also had the opportu-
nity to be checked out by specialists
including a psychologist, medical
doctor, pediatrician, endocrinologist,
psychiatrist and dentist.
After the event, which was chaired
by Bonnie Winkler of Franklin, Lori
Silverstein, Jon Dwoskin and Missy
Handler of Huntington Woods and Sue
Oleinick of Farmington Hills, guests
were provided with transportation to
the shelters where they spend their
nights. Li
