In 2004, the FDA and EPA
warned women who are or
may become pregnant and
. ,
,c(/ i young children:
)• Do not eat Shark,
,
Swordfish, King Mack-
erel, or Tilefish;
• Eat up to 12 oz. a
week of fish/shell-
fish that are lower in
mercury (e.g., shrimp,
canned light tuna, salmon,
and others), but only 6 oz.
per week of white albacore tuna;
• Check local advisories about the
safety of fish caught in local wa-
terways; if no advice is available,
limit intake to 6 oz. per week.

However, as reported in the New
York Times and Miami Herald
(among others) last week, recent
studies indicate that methylmer-
cury in fresh sushi-grade tuna may
be on a par with that found in the
"Do not eat" category above. For
more information, see: epa.gov/wa-
terscience/fish/, and nytimes.com
and miamiherald.com archives.
