his dad is an alumnus, got his musical
start at age 3, when he joined Yiddishe
Cup to play tambourines at small
events. His dad says he stole the show.
After moving on to drums and
taking lessons in school, Stratton got
his first payment — $5 — for play-
ing with Yiddishe Cup at a temple
Chanukah party when he was 10. As
a teen, he also worked with different
groups, including a rock band with
friends and his school's jazz band.
When Stratton settled into college,
he took a practical career approach.
"I'm a performing arts technology
major:' Stratton explains. "It's a rela-
tively new program, dealing with audio
recording, production, lighting and
sound.
"I think it's really cool, with a lot of
work on the computer. There's plenty
to do in this field as far as engineering.
It's not a totally mindless trade'
Stratton has not done any profes-
sional recording, but he performs his
original songs on his MySpace and
YouTube pages, www.myspace/djpara-
diddle and www.youtube.com/ (Jack
Stratton).
"EZ Mac" is a narrative about a kid
who wins Iron Chef. Facebook Boogie"
compares the Facebook Web site to a
dance.
"My composing is not deep:' says
Stratton, who also has appeared with
the West Lounge Klezmer/Jazz Fusion
Band and a Hillel a cappella choir; he
soon will be profiled on the Big Ten
Network. "I keep it lighthearted and
hopefully fun to hear," he adds.

To make his Web recordings, Stratton
sometimes uses other musicians and
sometimes plays different instruments
himself, later merging the sounds elec-
tronically. Although he feels a special
communication and bond working
with his dad, there's a stronger feeling
experienced by the senior Stratton.
"The emotional connection through
music is great;' says Bert Stratton, a
founder of the Ann Arbor Blues and
Jazz Festival. "The blood relationship
makes all that really dynamic?'

God/Oprah, we know something origi-
nal is about to unfold.
To enjoy the play, superbly directed
by Nick Calanni, it helps if you have an
appreciation for some good-natured
and well-executed irreverence. All fam-
ily members have differing opinions
about everything, which they express
with frequency, passion and candor.
No thing is sacred — from the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict to circumcision.
Mary Copenhagen's costumes pro-
vide a valuable visual portrayal of the
characters' personalities. Lydia's ward-
robe is as flamboyant as she is — from
her pink hair to her day-glo flowered
smock. Rachel's clothes are colorless: a
tailored black pantsuit, a white cardi-
gan, a black dress and head covering.
The frequent shifts between the talk-
show and the Horowitz's dining room
keep the play moving. Music is used
effectively to make the set transitions
and emphasize the theme of each scene.
Except for the "God/Oprah" charac-
ter, played commendably by English

DAIRY TRAY

(you may recognize her as the original
Detroit Power Woman in the Gem
Theatre's long-running production of
Menopause the Musical), all of the other
actors have the challenge of playing
themselves at various ages and stages
of life, which they accomplish with skill
and believability. Govich goes from the
giddy teenager who dreams of becom-
ing a singer to the somewhat disillu-
sioned wife and mother looking back
at her life and the choices she made.
She also has a wonderful singing voice,
making the audience believe she could
have hit the big time if Max hadn't
lured her down a more traditional path.
The only negative is that the maud-
lin, conventional title doesn't do justice
to this maginative and touching play.
Ignore the title; see the show.
