"They forget my birthday, but not the day I stopped drinking:" Kutinsky is medical director of Pathway Family Center in Southfield, which treats teen addiction, often requiring different skills because "teens resist treatment:" He's on the medical staff of Brighton Hospital, one of the nation's oldest sub- stance abuse treatment facilities. "Dr. Jay [as he is known] takes people where they are and gets them moti- vated to get where they need to be said Richard Kramer, who is Brighton's vice president for development and president of its fundraising arm, the Brighton National Addiction Foundation. Brighton recently began offering pre-prepared kosher meals to its Jewish patients after its dietary staff did an in-service training with the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Greater Detroit. "We had enough Jewish patients to hold a service on the High Holidays:' said Kramer, who serves on the devel- opment committee of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit. As medical review officer of the St. John Health System and director of addiction medicine at St. John Macomb- Oakland Hospital, Kutinsky "is very involved in teaching residents and interns how to best treat patients who suffer from this disorder as well as mak- ing sure they are aware of all the latest advances in the practice of addiction medicine,' said Dr. Gary Berg, Macomb- Oakland's chief medical officer. "He is frequently consulted on patients who require an addiction spe- cialist, helps physicians who may be part of the Health Professional Recovery Program and acts as a resource to me," Berg added. Kutinsky is also on the advisory board of the West Bloomfield-based Daniel B. Sobel Friendship House, which refers and provides services to Jewish addicts and their loved ones. At his private practice based in Sterling Heights, "I treat a lot of doc- tors and other health professionals:' He treats medical problems, refers to substance abuse centers and administers drugs to ease with- drawal and others to block the desire for alcohol or drugs. Withdrawal from heroin or any of the opiates used to take days and be awful, Kutinsky said. In the last five years, new drugs help a patient to more comfortably withdraw over a one- to two- hour period in a doctor's office. "They can go to rehab or a meeting right away. The withdrawal is much easier than for alcoholics." Although AA was and is his path to sobriety, Kutinsky encourages his patients to use every means while they are in the throes of the disease. "The more intense the treatment, the more chance of recovery:' he said.Treatment should be multi-faceted, he added, including counseling and medications. "It's more than just abstinence,' Kutinsky warned. "That's just the begin- ning. You have to have a program for recovery. Although two-thirds relapse, you can't give up on them. Sometimes it takes what it takes."
