The mitzvah project he found most meaningful was working with children at the West Bloomfield-based Friendship Circle. Sydney Blair Rich, daughter of Suzie and Samuel Meklir and Steve Rich, will celebrate her bat mitzvah Friday, Jan. 25, at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. She is the sister of Jordan. Her Rich grandparents are Marian and Ron Rich, Bernice Zacks Davidson and the late Joel Norman Zacks. Sydney attends Bloomfield Hills Middle School. Her involvement with Southfield- based JARC, doing many different activi- ties during the past year, is what she felt had the most meaning for her in regard to mitzvah projects. Jenna Lee Shapiro (Yaacova Leah), daughter of Margot and Michael Shapiro, was called to read from the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Congregation B'nai Israel in Tustin, Shapiro Calif. She was joined in the celebration by her brother Frank and sister Isabel, grand- parents Harriet and I. William Sherr of Southfield, and grandparents Florence and Jerry Shapiro of Wooster, Ohio. The ceremony was officiated by Rabbi Elie Spitz and longtime family friend Cantor Marcia Tilchin. For her mitzvah project, Jenna started a southern California chapter of Stuffed Animals for Emergencies (SAFE), for which she has collected and donated over 1,000 stuffed animals to children at emer- gency organizations and shelters through- out Orange County, Calif.
