What is it and what should I know about it? Thanks, A Concerned Dieter. : A nsvver: Dear Concerned Dieter, Technically, Hoodia is a genus of 13 species of the flowering plant family, Apocyn- aceae (a.k.a. dogbane). Most likely, what you've heard about is the species, "Hoodia Gor- dinii" (HG), which is purported to have medicinal qualities and was reported about on 60 Min- utes sometime ago. HG is native to South Africa and Namibia and sports flowers that smell like rotten meat (‘'./ and are pollinated mainly by flies (how's that for , appetizing?). 0 HG has long been known to the indigenous people of southern Africa for its reported medicinal properties: most famously, suppress- ing appetite. The active ingredient in HG that is believed to possess appetite-suppressing qualities has been named, "P57." In 2002, The American drug com- pany, Pfizer, Inc., abandoned its ef- forts to synthesize P57, suggesting to some that the substance lacked efficacy. To date, HG has not been approved by the FDA and there has been no published scientific evi- dence that HG suppresses appetite in humans. I hope this helps. — Barbara Beznos, Registered Dietitian Direct Your Questions For Barb And Counseling Inquiries To: Integrated Nutrition, L.Le y .32401. Northwestern Hwy. Hills.
