any people know Jeff
Cohen as a critic of main-
stream media and its
complicity in American foreign policy.
What they may not know is that the
author of Cable News Confidential
and founder of FAIR (Fairness and
Accuracy in
Reporting) began
his life of activ-
ism back at North
Farmington High
School.
Cohen will
return to the
Detroit area on
Saturday, Jan. 26,
Jeff Cohen
when he joins
the former chief
U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq, Scott
Ritter, to discuss Iran and U.S. Foreign
Policy in the program "Tour of Duty:
The Iran Talks," part of a national tour
stopping in 12 cities across the U.S.
The Huntington Woods Peace,
Citizenship and Education Project will
sponsor the local program.
The son of Vi and Sol Cohen, own-
ers of the Princeton Shop, Jeff became
the center of a school walkout over
the dress code at North Farmington
in 1969.
He was suspended for wearing a few
whiskers on his chin. Carrying signs
reading "Let my people grow:' some
300 students staged a protest on his
behalf, bringing out the local news
media.
By the time he was 21, Cohen man-
aged to get himself fired from the
Princeton Shop when he organized the
workers to sign a petition demanding
a ban on selling non-union pants in
the store. "I remember the day so well,"
said Cohen. "My dad broke the news
to me gently and said he had to let me
go; and I said, `Dad, you are a great
dad and I love you, but you are a class
enemy.'"
Since those budding days of pro-
gressive activism, Cohen went on to
attend the University of Michigan and
later moved to California where he
attended law school, became a mem-
ber of the bar and worked as a jour-
nalist and a lawyer for the ACLU.
In 1986, he founded FAIR (Fairness

and Accuracy in Reporting), the
national media watch group based in
New York. He was the senior producer
for MSNBC's Donahue. He also hosted
CNN's Crossfire and was a weekly
panelist on Fox News Channel's News
Watch.
Cohen lives in upstate New York.
Presenting "The Iran Talks" with
Ritter, Cohen will explore America's
current foreign policy toward Iran
and what Cohen and Ritter believe is
the Bush administration's impending
march to war.
In Ritter's book Target Iran, pub-
lished a year ago, he said that Iran
had ceased pursuing nuclear weapons.
Recently, 16 U.S. intelligence agencies
have publicly come to the same con-

clusion.

Despite this revelation, Cohen and
Ritter maintain that Bush's drive
towards military action is clear. Cohen
will discuss the mainstream media,
what it doesn't tell the public and its
role in promoting the government
policy toward Iran. ❑

Tour of Duty: The Iran Talks,"
featuring Jeff Cohen and Scott
Ritter will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 26, at First United
Methodist Church of Ferndale,
22331 Woodward. The speakers
will sign books. Admission is $10.
For information, contact (248)
546-6834, www.hwpeace.org or

There will a cocktail party
to meet Jeff Cohen and Scott
Ritter on Friday, Jan. 25. There
is a $35 charge. Call (248) 546-
6834.
