Health & Fitness SPORTS Leg Strong Two-sport athlete credits leg strength for his success. Steve Stein Special to The Jewish News T able tennis and wrestling seem like they belong at opposite ends of the sports spectrum. But Bloomfield Hills Andover High School senior Danny Dulkin excels in both of them, and he doesn't think that's a coincidence. "You have to have strong legs to do well in both sports," said Dulkin, who was a member of the win- ning four-member team in Division 7 at the North American Danny Dulkin Teams Table Tennis Championship held during Thanksgiving weekend in Baltimore. Dulkin also is a four-time state table tennis champion and he's been to Romania three times to train in that country's Olympic facilities. Jon Bosika, Dulkin's table tennis coach, takes a group of his students to Romania every year. Dulkin attended the legendary University of Minnesota wrestling coach J Robinson's intensive 28-day camp last summer. "The camp was the toughest experi- ence of my life, but now I feel like I have an encyclopedic knowledge of wrestling and I'm in great shape said Dulkin, an Andover co-captain. Dulkin had a 9-4 record in the 130- pound weight class at the start of the new year. He made it to the second day of the Oakland County tournament for the first time in his three seasons on the Andover team, and Andover Coach Darren Avig is sure more accomplish- ments are on the horizon. Dulkin also has a black belt in tae- kwondo that he earned when he was 8, but this young man doesn't just excel in sports. He plays trumpet in the Andover marching and symphony bands that performed in London, England, during the New Year break. What does the future hold for the multi-talented 17-year-old? With a 3.4 grade point, Dulkin hopes to be accepted into the Naval Academy or the Navy's ROTC program at the University of Colorado, University of Illinois or University of Minnesota.
