A nswer (continued from last time): Dear Beryl, last time I discussed those differences. This time I'd like to focus more on the use of herbs as medicine. Herbalism (a.k.a. herbal medicine and phytotherapy, among others) is the term often used when referring to the application of particular e/ plant and plant extracts in ) a medicinal or curative \ setting. The practice of herbal- ism is typically thought of as part of the body of non-scientific traditional (a.k.a. indigenous or folk) medicine, which goes back at least to the ancient Chinese (via a herb book circa 2700 B.C.), and most likely to prehistoric times courtesy of our cousins, the Neanderthals. Anthropologists theorize that some animals practice their own form of herbalism by selecting medicinal plants based on their bitter taste. Given the genealogy of medicinal herbs, undoubtedly, there is medic- inal efficacy to be found there— the problem is in verifying it. Before you embark on your own program of herbal therapy, I strongly recommend you consult your physician and/or nutritionist. — Barbara Beznos, Registered Dietitian Direct Your Questions For Barb And Counseling Inquiries To: Integrated Nutrition, LLC, 32401 Northwestern Hwy.
