Land from page A13 — political and organizational — to fur- ther our efforts." She praised our Jewish community, agencies and synagogues for "advocating through education, fundraising efforts, food drives, empty bowls events, encouraging Yad Ezra as a site for students' community service and bringing groups to volunteer at our warehouse" In addition, the Jewish News has been a staunch advocate of hunger issues in Israel and the Detroit Jewish community. Added Mazon's Schockman,"Detroiters get it. What Detroit has achieved is what every community should be doing." Joel Jacob with incoming Mazon national board member Rabbi Elimelich Goldberg of Southfield and Knesset members Moshe Kahalon and Nadia Hilou paradigm for other communities to repli- cate and follow," said Luger who met with the Israeli contingency in the Yad Ezra warehouse. "In addition to the incredible support of local individuals and businesses, we are grateful and fortunate to be in a commu- nity where agencies truly partner with each other to help those in need. On a national level, Mazon has been very supportive financially and has provided us with oppor- tunities and resources to meet with leaders What Hunger Is "It used to be said that there was no hun- ger in Israel:' said community activist Joel Jacob, who organized the trip for the Israeli visitors as well as hosted their visits within Detroit. "You could call it the best kept secret. But now the secret's out" Some don't speak about hunger in Israel because the definition of the word gets lost in the translation, said Rabbi Yanoff. "There is no real Hebrew word for hun- ger that doesn't mean "famine," he said. "And there is no famine in Israel." Added Israeli visitor, Knesset member, Moshe Kahalon, "Israel is not a Third World country. We are a developed country, with 5 percent growth in economy. There is a problem because the price of our products is high and income doesn't catch up. The jobless rate is not a problem. There is hun- ger, but Israel is not suffering from famine or drought such as in Africa;' Kahalon said. "The phrase 'food insecurity' means inad- equate and poor quality food." The term, said Schockman, was adapted from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's usage. Kahalon — chairperson of the Knesset lobby to raise the living standards of the poor, and the most senior member of Israel's Likud party after party chairman Benjamin Netanyahu — visited Detroit with others, including Nadia Hilou. A Labor party member, Hilou is the only female Arab Knesset member and is chairperson of the committee on children's rights. "What was so awesome is that they are from different political parties but are united in the desire to end hunger in Israel," Jacob said.
