NOTEBOOK
A Campus Voice For Israel
David Stiebel, 20, a 2005 graduate of the Frankel Jewish Academy in West
Bloomfield and currently a college junior, is serving as a pro-Israel Emerson
Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge,
Mass. The fellowship, which carries a stipend, is a project of
StandWithUs, the Los Angeles-based Israel education and
advocacy organization.
Nationwide, 38 Emerson Fellows serve as a resource for stu-
dents looking for information about Israeli culture and society.
They also plan events and education initiatives and promote
StandWithUs programs. StandWithUs provides fellows with
information packets, training and leadership seminars.
David Stiebel
Stiebel, president of MIT Students for Israel and active with
AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, provides
information about Israeli politics, culture and values for MIT
students.
"Anti-Israel sentiment at other campuses is pretty bad;' Stiebel, a Michigan
native and math and computer science major, told the Jewish Advocate in Boston.
"At MIT, there is not a strong bias on campus — but it can often look that way
because the pro-Israel side is not doing much!"
Stiebel organizes responses to counter what may be perceived as anti-Israel
campus events, speakers and class teachings.
Stiebel is also in the process of organizing a coalition-building event, where
Jewish, Palestinian and other Arab students will discuss the prospects for peace.
"We are trying to reach out to student leaders to get both sides to work togeth-
er and try to figure out what we'd like to see come out of all this:' he said.

AJC Goes Green
The American Jewish Committee has been named to the Energy Leadership Club
by the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership. The honor
recognizes AJC's purchase of "green power" to meet 100 percent of its U.S.-based
electricity usage.
AJC has been an advocate for developing energy policy that will reduce
America's dependence on foreign energy sources and protect the environment. It
offers its staff cash incentives to buy fuel-efficient vehicles. It is also working to
green its national headquarters in New York by operating in compliance with the
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating
System.
AJC is the third largest nonprofit green power purchaser nationally among
Green Power Partners. Based on a national average emissions rate, AJC's green
power purchase is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide emissions of more
than 200 passenger cars each year.
Clarification
Regarding "A Lesson In Pluralism" (Jan. 10, page A5), former

Yachad Modiin nonprofit organization in Modiin, Israel. This
organization supports Yachad Modiin's preschools, elementa-
ry school, high school, parents' informal education and com-
munity activities. A grant of more than $1 million from the
Legacy Heritage Fund will go toward expanding the campus.
Yachad Modiin was founded in 2000 by parents seeking

inclusive approach based on Jewish values. The organiza-
Dani Elazar
tion's 570 families represent a diversity of Jewish and socio-
economic backgrounds.
Yachad Modiin works in cooperation with Meitarim
Network, an organization dedicated to promoting Jewish education in an envi-
ronment that integrates Israeli children from different Jewish backgrounds. In
addition to the financial and ideological support that Meitarim provides Yachad,
Meitarim helps develop the innovative curriculum need by this new type of
Israel school.
