OSIAS SCHREIBER, 89, of Queens, New York, died Dec. 30, 2007, following prolonged illness. Dr. Schreiber was born in Iasi, Romania, March 19, 1918. His father was a dealer in antique books. Dr. Schreiber became a prominent obste- trician-gynecologist and introduced many new gynecologic techniques to Eastern Europe. During the Nazi occupation, Dr. Schreiber served as a physician to the Bucharest ghetto and helped save fellow Jews from deporta- tion. Following the war, he was interred in a communist labor camp for several years. He returned to his practice in Bucharest; and after years of attempt- ing to leave Romania, finally emigrat- ed, first to Italy, and then to New York in 1963. There, he began his medical training over again, this time in family medicine. He was a family physician in New York City until his retirement. Dr. Schreiber is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Theodore and Michelle Schreiber of Bloomfield Hills; grandchildren Hilary and David; son, Dr. Gabriel Schreiber and daughter-in- law, Linda; grandchildren, Jeremy and Joshua, of Middletown, N.J.; numerous nieces and nephews in Israel. His wife of over 50 years, Serafina, passed away two years ago. master's in art his- tory and was a paralegal at Dykema Gossett. She was also a longtime docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts, was active in Congregation Shaarey Zedek and spent her entire life devoted to Detroit's Jewish community. Mrs. Shapiro is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alan Shapiro and Joan Aguado of California; daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Shapiro and Amos Gelb of Washington, D.C., Anne and Scott August of West Bloomfield; grandchildren, Danny and Joey Shapiro, Noa, Eliya and Mica Gelb, Steven and Jared August; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Judith Klein.
