A True Marriage Whether or not a person approves of intermarriage, it is a fact of modern Jewish life. So I found it rather amus- ing that Special Writer Susan Tawil's article "Intermarriage" on two books both opposing intermarriage (Dec. 13, page C4) was followed by Special Writer Danielle Freni's article about a non-Jewish movie star having con- verted to Judaism and then marrying a rabbi ("A Spiritual Connection," Dec. 20, page B3). I do not agree with the premise given in the rabbis' books that a lack of Jewish education is a main cause of intermarriage. My husband received a "true Jewish education" from an Orthodox synagogue in Newton, Mass. After six years of Hebrew school, he never wanted to step foot in a syna- gogue again. Once we were married and decided together to raise our two sons Jewish, it took me six years to convince my husband that affilia- tion with a temple was the best way to immerse children in the beauty of Jewish culture and religion. The good news is that the world is richer by two more teenagers with Jewish identities, thanks to what we consider our "true marriage' We have been married for 23 years and so far have seen no signs of "breakdown" in our relationship, which, by the way, never functions "on the surface' An intermarried couple does not have time to deal with life at a surface level, due to constantly being brought into question by Christians and Jews alike. Furthermore, non-Jews involved in a temple have given their offspring to Judaism, which in itself is a form of conversion that must be respected. I believe the "top concern to the conti- nuity of the Jewish people" remains to be seen, but it has nothing to do with intermarriage. Anyone who is interested in the topic of intermarriage is welcome to attend an upcoming intermarriage symposium, which is being held April 12 at the Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills. Amazing Support Thank you for recognizing the work of Project Chessed in providing access to health care for our many uninsured community members ("Sosnick Award Winner," Dec. 27, page B1). As we face these difficult economic conditions, it is important to recognize the chang- ing face of the uninsured among us. Story Development Editor Kerri Guten Cohen's story told it well. Karen Sosnick Schoenberg's com- ments appropriately acknowledged our 561 individual volunteer physi- cians who are the backbone of our referral network. The untold part of the story is the amazing support for this program that has been provided by the officers and board of Jewish Family Service under the leadership of our board president Sandy Muskovitz Danto. Their commitment to JFS serv- ing as the community safety net agen- cy enables us to move forward in new directions. Their vision guides us in developing new initiatives in Chessed for those in need.
