Together since 2004, when they were hired on the spot with their first audi- tions, the Doodlebop performers enjoy a special bond away from their shows. "The three of us are the band, and we travel with four backup dancers and a crew of 10," Wexler explains about the troupe, which adds comedy into the mix. "There also are 15 people to handle the concessions. The kids can buy Doodlebop toys as they leave?' While the trio members are relative- ly new to show business, their work is based on the ideas of a creative team with considerable experience. Director Jaime Waese, as an execu- tive with Walt Disney TV Animation, oversaw the writing for Recess, Buzz Lighear and House of Mouse. Musical director Carl Lennox has worked on children's programming, such as The Care Bears, Babar and Franklin the Turtle. Choreographer David Connolly has coached singing stars, including Patti LaBelle and Chaka Than. Wexler's entry into show business came at the encouragement of his mother, Denise Antoni Wexler, a der- matologist who has lived in Detroit. She thought he might like participat- ing in theater and took him to audi- tion for a professional production of Oliver! being staged near their home. He won a role in the chorus. "It was an awesome experience Wexler says. "It changed my life While taking private theater lessons, Wexler's work continued with succes- sive roles. The list of shows into which he has been cast includes The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, Hello Dolly and Into the Woods. Wexler learned to play drums specifically for the series and currently studies piano. "What I like about performing is a much larger experience than being onstage Wexler says. "It creates a euphoria for me, and I just love it!' Although the Doodlebops concerts have given Wexler considerable travel experience, two of his most memora- ble trips have been to Israel. The first was with his family, which includes two brothers, and the second was with his best friend for a Birthright tour. "I've been amazed at how diverse the country of Israelis" explains Wexler, whose mother converted to Judaism when she married his dad, anesthesiologist Ron Wexler. "I had my bar mitzvah in Canada, but I haven't yet chosen any synagogue to join in California?' Break time for Wexler means trying new adventures. Most recently, he has taken up rock climbing. He also enjoys hanging out with friends and watching football games. "I bring my whole life to an audi- ence, and I believe that all people can do in life is capitalize on opportuni- ties," Wexler says. "I just hope that I can keep working as an entertainer!' our new Japanese/Korean Restaurant right n the neighborhood.
