Arts & Entertainment Trust Your Intuition In her new book, Michigan native and spiritual intuitive Char Margolis explains how to get the best life possible. Gail Zimmerman Arts Editor C har Margolis has never left her Michigan roots far behind — even though for more than 30 2 years she has been giving spiritual read- ings to people all over the world. The Oak Park High Class of 1969 grad maintains a home here and attends Temple Israel (where she was confirmed), like her parents and grandparents before her. With a Wayne State University degree in secondary education, she takes her "class- room" with her wherever she goes, teach- ing others to access their own sixth sense. We caught up with Margolis by phone, just after she wrapped up five days of special guest appearances with psychic medium John Edward in New York. Edward wrote the foreword for Margolis' new book, Discover Your Inner Wisdom: Using Intuition, Logic and Common Sense to Make Your Best Choices (Fireside Books; $24). With appearances scheduled for Jan. 10 on the Today show and Entertainment Tonight and others likely to be set up on Larry King Live, where she is a frequent guest, Live with Regis and Kelly and oth- ers, Margolis is giving her Michigan fans an in-person opportunity to hear how we can "find our way, discover our true desires and live in tune with what the uni- Char Margolis: "Life is like a treasure hunt, and the universe is always supplying us with clues on how to find our treasures." verse wants for us!' It told me Michigan was a safer place for me, to be with my family and stay close to my roots. IN: What is the one most important thing a person can do to develop his or her intuition, and how do you dis- tinguish what you think is an intuitive sign from mere coincidence? CM: First, you have to own your power. If you have any doubt [about your own power], it will get in the way. Then you have to remember the time you wanted something and you got a warning and you didn't pay attention to it and you paid the consequences. You need to remember the feeling when you didn't listen. That was your first gut feeling. There is no such thing as mere coin- cidence; a coincidence is a sign from the universe. IN: Before its U.S. publication this month, your book was published in the Netherlands, where it was a No. 1 bestseller, knocking The Da Vinci Code to No. 2. You also have a weekly prime- time TV show in Holland, watched by more than a million of the county's 16 million citizens. What is it about your work that appeals to the traditionally pragmatic Dutch people? CM: The Netherlands isn't dominated by any one religious group so powerful that it [negates free thought]. The people of the Netherlands understand emotions and human relationships and spiritual- ity. People spend more alone time there — walking the canals or through the woods or riding their bikes — than in other places, so they are more in touch with their own thoughts. You have to be in touch with your thoughts to understand all of this. )1■1: You mention a lot of connections to Michigan in your book — including several physicians who use a combina- tion of traditional and energy-focused medicine and your Michigan-based family.
