Medicinal herbs, on the other

roots, flowers, seeds, root
bark, inner bark (cambium),

berries and sometimes the

dicinal herbs are used to
treat various ailments/
illnesses, often as part
of a folk, or alternative
medicine remedy.
Herbs and spices can
somewhat overlap. Most
spices are dried seeds, fruits, roots,
bark, or other vegetative substanc-
es that when added to food provide
flavor or act as a preservative. Like
herbs, spices can also be used for
medicinal (and other) purposes.
I've really only scratched the sur-
face here—more on this next time.

Culinary herbs often come from
the leafy part of such plants as
rosemary, thyme, basil, sage, mint,
oregano, and cilantro and are used
in food preparation because of
their aromatic and flavorful prop-
erties. They tend to provide flavor
rather than substance to food.
