To achieve peace, Israel and Jews worldwide will have to accept sharing
Jerusalem and Palestinians will have to accept that refugees will "return" to a
Palestinian state."
The anti-negotiation forces are conveniently using the emotional tie to Jerusalem
in an attempt to scuttle the entire renewed peace process.
At the end of the day, Jerusalem must be treated like the other core issues when
it comes to negotiations. Diaspora Jews have no more say regarding the specifics of
border modifications on the West Bank than which Arab Jerusalem neighborhood
becomes part of the capital of a Palestinian state.
The 137th Psalm instructs us, "If I forget thee, 0 Jerusalem, let my right hand
lose her cunning!' Olmert, a former mayor of Jerusalem, will need all of his cun-
ning and American Jewish support to address these difficult challenges on the road
to peace. ❑

It surely is awkward for Olmert to be on the other side of an issue that so
unites Jews and to find such tepid support for his own position, but it is impor-
tant that he not let his frustration erode core principles on which Israel's exis-
tence always hinges. We recall Olmert's own adjuration that every Jew is obligat-
ed to speak out regarding Jerusalem's fate because "Jerusalem is not only the city
of those who live in Jerusalem, it's not only the city of those who live in the State
of Israel — it is the city of every Jewish person no matter where he lives."
In uttering those words, Olmert ratified personally that which every Israeli
prime minister has declared and which Jews have believed since long before the
modern State of Israel came into being.
By floating a division of Jerusalem, Olmert started down the path of sever-
ing the link between his government and the core principle that the Land of
Israel is by right the Jewish homeland. It should serve as a red flag to him that
as an immediate consequence, he found himself undermining the relationship
between Jews everywhere and the State of Israel.
Our right to work with our brethren in Israel for the preservation of our eter-
nal and indivisible Jewish capital is one that no one, not even the prime minister
of any party, can ever deny. ❑

Livni rightly complained that much media attention was drawn last month to
Israeli plans to accommodate Jewish population growth in greater Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, most media outlets ignored the murder of two Israelis by
Palestinian security men in a drive-by shooting last week. These men carried
arms by the terms of a previous peace agreement. Livni called on the media
to provide a complete picture of a complex situation.
