"not that much opposite of [Lloyd
Webber]. We both grew up with a
rare and strange music combina-
tion. We joke that we each took each
other's careers, intertwining theatrical
impulses with rock impulses. I spent
my first seven years out of Amherst
(Mass.) College doing theater work."
Steinman, who's also a producer,
singer and pianist, has sold 100 mil-
lion recordings, mainly with rockers
like Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler, but
also with Celine Dion.
The 23 songs in Whistle Down
the Wind include "No Matter What,"
popularized by Boyzone; "When
Children Rule the World:' sung at the
last Olympics; "A Kiss Is a Terrible
Thing To Waste"; "It Just Doesn't Get
Any Better Than This"; "Try Not To Be
Afraid"; "Long Overdue for a Miracle";
and the title number.
Playing the criminal is Eric Kunze,
who has played "Jesus" before — in
Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar.
Leading the children's ensemble is
Andrea Ross, 16, who has been fea-
tured in High School Musical and The
Sound of Music.
Twelve children are selected from
community theaters and talent agen-
cies in each tour city, and nine are in
the permanent entourage, including
Sarah Safer, 8, of New Jersey. She is the
only Jewish cast member. Her father,
Bradley, is a computer programmer,

and her mother, Barbara, is accompa-
nying her on the 10-city tour.
"I started dancing at 4 and sing-
ing at 6 and I was in synagogue and
community shows like Annie and Bye
Bye Birdie said Sarah, who is being
raised Conservative. "I'm having a lot
of fun on the tour; we get to see all
the sights." A third-grader, she and the
other children use two tutors while on
the tour, and their mothers help teach.
"Everyone kept raving to us about
Sarah's voice, telling us we should take
her to New York for auditions, so we
did last year and she won this role
said Barbara Safer. "She sings some
solo parts of songs in the show and
has some solo lines. She's looking
forward to the Kansas City, Kan., tour
stop because that's where we adopted
her.
"When the tour began in Houston,
we got the other kids and moms to
celebrate Rosh Hashanah with us at a
restaurant, where I brought apples and
honey:" El
