In the Nov. 29 issue, Publisher Arthur Horwitz encourages the Detroit Jewish community to "Re-balance the relationship with all Israel-focused philanthropy" ("Jewish Detroit Must Save Itself," page A5). While pointing out the amount of funds the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit raised for Israel in 2006 and the assets of our United Jewish Foundation along with some demographic studies of our Jewish population, very little real information is provided regarding local Jewish needs. Mr. Horwitz states, "Local safety-net agencies, like Jewish Family Service, Hebrew Free Loan, JVS and Yad Ezra, are serving record numbers of cli- ents." He does not advise as to those numbers, needs or shortfall that these agencies are experiencing. He states that "the volume of local residents requesting financial assistance is growing." Growing by what amount? What is the extent of the problem? Mr. Horwitz's concern may have merit, but he fails to make his case. He states, "Our top professional and lay leaders must re-orient and re-educate our com- munity to the needs we have here ..." Good idea! I respectfully submit that we know exactly what we are dealing with before we advocate any "re-balancing" of our philanthropic efforts for Israel. Israel is a land that struggles daily just to survive. We must be very careful when we advocate any change in our financial support for Israel and we better be very certain of what we are talking about. Sherrie Stern V.P., communications and marketing, Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah West Bloomfield Liberal Edition Of JN? Within the first handful of pages in the Dec. 20 IN, I was treated to letters explaining that the only way to deal with the Palestinian and Arab terrorists was to negotiate with them ("Negotiate Peace," page A6) and that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were the mod- ern-day biblical Deborah and Barak ("Biblical Comparison': page A6). Then two editorials, one from the JN ("Wither Iran, Or The CIA?:' Dec. 20, page A25) and one by our esteemed and honorable senator (Carl Levin) about how the CIA and the Bush administra- tion have destroyed America's standing in the the world ("U.S. Must Restore Image, Credibility Dec. 20, page A26). A vast majority of Palestinians and the Arab world would destroy Israel and America and kill every living Jew — including you and me if they could. What else can they do to prove it? The National Intelligence Estimate report was shown to be politically motivated and even contradicted itself many times. And if the Saudis, with reports show- ing 40 percent of the terrorists in Iraq are Saudi and killing Americans, need only to mention Guantanamo Bay or Abu Ghraib in response to their pathetic human rights record and support of terrorism to scare away our members of Congress, then we are in terrible shape. President Bush may have made many missteps, but unlike the "new" Deborah and Barak, he knows that if we do not fight, the Islamofacists will not stop. Michael L. Kahan Bloomfield Hills Corrections •"Outstate Outreach" (Dec. 27, page A13) should have stated that Burton Shifman had family in Bay City but did not grow up there. • "Whopper Didn't Get Away" (Dec. 20, page A9) should have stated that Michael Katzman studied with Rabbi Beryl Wein at Ohr Somayach.
