A pride of Lion King fans raises
record-breaking funds for JARC.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGIE BAAN

About 2,700 people answered the call of the wild Dec. 2, brav-
ing the elements to flock to the Detroit Opera House for a
special sold-out performance of the Tony Award—winning musi-
cal The Lion King. The event raised more than $1.4 million
for JARC, the largest fundraiser ever held for the Farmington
Hills—based nonprofit organization that provides group homes
and support services for people with developmental disabilities.
"I could talk all afternoon about how wonderful JARC is and
ROBIN SCHWARTZ
all it does for our community," event chair Howard Luckoff of
West Bloomfield told the crowd. "On behalf of JARC president Craig Erlich, the
board of directors and my co-chairs Lindsay and Ryan Dembs, Dana and Josh
Linkner and my wife, Nancy, I am grateful to all of you for your generous sup-
port." A pre-show champagne brunch was held for corporate and major individual
donors. The crowd also took time out to applaud Executive Director Joyce Keller,
who is stepping down after 29 years with the organization.
