ndrew Green didn't win
the ultimate prize for every
high school tennis player
— a state title — but he still had
a wonderful career at Birmingham
Seaholm.
Green played doubles in the
Division 2 state tournament all three
seasons he was on the Seaholm team.
Paired with a different senior partner
each year, Green fell twice in the state
finals and once in the state semifinals.
The state semifinal defeat came in
Green's sophomore year. Green and
John Miller, the top seeds at No. 3
doubles, lost 6-1, 6-1 to fourth-seed
Mark Bejin and Kevin Seidman of
Birmingham Groves.
Green and David Blake were the
second seed at No. 2 doubles in
Green's junior year.
They were beaten by top seed Kevin
Hagan and Ben Stilwill of Okemos
6-2, 7-5 in the state finals as Hagan
and Stilwill completed an undefeated
season.
Back as the top seed again this
season, Green and fellow senior Will
Stewart made it to the state finals at
No. 1 doubles before falling to second
seed Adam Jadun and Steve Wolff of
East Lansing 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3.
Green and Stewart won 20 of 23
matches this season. Each time they
stepped onto the court, they faced the
opposition's best doubles team.
They were rewarded for their efforts
by being named to the Michigan High
School Tennis Coaches Association's
All-State Team.
They also were named Seaholm's
co-MVPs by Coach Keith Bernacki,
who appointed them team co-captains
before the season.
"It was very cool to be named All-
State along with Will because we're
good friends, and we've known each
other for a long time," said Green, who
attended Quarton Elementary School
and Derby Middle School with Stewart
before they went to Seaholm.
Green said it wasn't easy meshing
with a new doubles partner season
after season. "But once we got some
experience playing together, we got
better:' Green said. "My first two
partners were big hitters. Will plays
like me, conservatively. We just keep
hitting the ball back and wait for an
opening."
Green hoped to play singles when
he first joined the Seaholm team,
but Bernacki wanted him to play
doubles and it turned out to be a
good idea.
A 3.3 grade point average student,
Green has applied to several universi-
ties. He hopes to play club tennis in
college.
Shapiro's "A' Game
Thanks to a thrilling one-point victory
in the playoff title game, Shapiro's A
team owns the championship of the
M. Jacob and Sons AZA Flag Football
League.
Shapiro A edged rival Jolson A 34-
33, stopping Jolson on a fourth-down
play late in the game.
Shapiro A players included Eric
Altman (who threw four touch-
down passes against Jolson A), Mark
Feldman, Alex Goldfarb, Brian
Indianer, Avery Neuman, Eric
Tugender and Adam Weiner.
Kishon A defeated Jolson B 42-35 in
the league's third-place playoff game.
All league games were played at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
