Bar ,
confused about
,, ,
body fat mea-
surements. Can
_ -
you illuminate
the subject? Thanks, Harry.

A

nswer: Dear Harry, First of
all, it should be noted that
body fat is different than
body weight and the two concepts
do not always move in lockstep.

Total body fat consists of two types
of fat: essential fat and storage fat.
Essential fat is the amount required
to maintain important body
functions and may be stored
in bone marrow, heart, lung,
11/
liver, spleen, kidneys,
) intestine, muscles, and
nervous system tissues.
Storage fat is made up of
fat in the adipose tissue
beneath the skin, which
acts to protect, cushion
and insulate the body.

Recommended body fat
percentages differ accord-
ing to sex. According to
a popular chart attributed to the
American Council on Exercise,
body fat ranges are as follows:

Description

Men

Women

Essential Fat

2-5%

12-15%

Athletes

6-13%

16-20%

Fitness

14-17%

21-24%

Acceptable

18-25%

25-31%

Obese

25%+

32%+

There are no less than 8 different
ways to measure body fat. Consult
with your physician or dietitian/nu-
tritionist to determine what is best
for you. I hope this helps.
