Obituaries from page C23

ZOLTAN BEER, 95, former Detroiter
of Hallendale Beach, Fla., died Dec. 17,
2007.
From his time as a child cre-
ating mischief in the streets of
Czechoslovakia to his days swimming
in the ocean in Florida, Mr. Beer was
a man who truly loved his life. To all
who knew him, he was a hero; and to
all who loved him, he was their "Zoli,"
"apu" or "grandpa."
The beginning of his life was not
an easy one. It began at the end of
World War I. In his 20s, he became
part of the Hungarian National Water
Polo team and met the love of his life,
Terezia. While World War II ravaged
Hungary, he worked in various labor
camps, escaped from the Nazis and
helped Teri to escape. Towards the end
of the war, Teri and Zoli were married
and in 1948 they had Suzi, their only
child.
During the Hungarian Revolution,
in 1956, they escaped from Hungary to
Austria and finally to Detroit to begin
their new lives.
Mr. Beer worked for some cousins
and did well enough for a happy and
long retirement down in Florida. He
swam and walked every day until the
day of his fatal stroke.
He is survived by his wife, Terezia
Beer; daughter, Suzi Colman; son-in-
law, Jonathan Colman; grandchildren,
Jeffrey Ferber, Sandy and Chris Brine,
Jessica and Zack Colman.
