Obituaries A funeral isn't an ordinary circumstance. That's why we have an extraordinary website. Obituaries are updated and archived on JNonline.us . MITCHELL L. BACOW, 92, died Dec. 14, 2007, in Boca Raton, Fla. A longtime Pontiac attorney, he was born in Pinsk, Russia, in 1915 and came to this country at the age of 5. His family settled in Detroit. He was the oldest of four children, working two jobs, so that he could attend Wayne State University at night. Following graduation from Wayne's law school, he enrolled in the Army. An accomplished ham radio operator, he was sent by the Army to Yale to be trained as a radar officer. Mr. Bacow was sta- tioned in the South Pacific during World War II and participated in the invasion of Tarawa. He was honored for his contri- butions to the war effort because he discovered that the enemy was being tipped off to the arrival of U.S. bombers by a radio signal used by U.S. forces to distinguish them from enemy plans. At Mr. Bacow's suggestion, U.S. planes began turn- ing off their IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) just prior to attack, thus greatly reducing losses due to enemy fire. He retired from the Army Air Corps as a major. He was active in the AMVETS. Upon returning from the War, Mr. Bacow met and married the former Ruth Wertheim, a survi- vor of Auschwitz. They settled in Pontiac, where they had two chil- dren. He became a very successful trial attorney in Pontiac. He also was an active businessman with interests in restaurants and nursing homes. In addition to ham radio, he enjoyed skiing, sailing, and tennis. Mr. Bacow is survived by his children, Elaine Simonson and her husband, Beryl, of Philadelphia; son, Lawrence Bacow and his wife, Adele, of Medford, Mass.; grand- children, Julie Simonson; Andrea Weingarten and her husband, Neil; Jay Bacow and his wife, Terri; and Kenneth Bacow; great-grandchild, Sophie Weingarten; brother, Martin Bacow and wife, Sarah; sister, Evelyn Grant and husband, Lou, both of Farmington Hills. He was the husband for 46 years of the late Ruth Bacow; brother of the late Sarah Davis. • Preplanning • Grief Resources • Send Condolences • Chapel Tour • Much More Familiarize yourself with all of our offerings from the comfort of your home computer.
