entertaining wartime thriller about a
gorgeous Jewish woman who joins the
Dutch Resistance.

The Bubble: The latest poly-sexual
pop drama from leading Israeli
director Eytan Fox (Walk On Water)
centers on a trio of good-looking 20-
something roommates — two gay
men and a straight woman — whose

apolitical lives are upended when one
of the guys begins an affair with a
Palestinian man.

Knocked Up: This erratic comedy
makes the list because it established
Seth Rogen as the first Jewish leading
man of the 21st century. Ben Stiller
isn't going away anytime soon, alas;
but Stiller's manic screen persona
seems mighty shallow and annoying
compared to Rogen's blend of smarts,
verbal pyrotechnics, self-deprecation
and self-confidence. II

subtle evolution that has been going
on from one recording to the next as
Schechter emerges as one of the most
talented Jewish music makers of her
generation. The latest album, Haran,
continues the group's exploration of
Middle Eastern modes and liturgical
texts with a series of sinuous, wind-
ing tunes that are frequently hypnotic
and invariably compelling.

Freedom Writers: Hilary Swank plays
a newbie teacher in multicultural L.A.
who uses The Diary of Anne Frank to
inspire her students. The plot (based
on a true story) is formulaic, ulti-
mately, but writer-director Richard
LaGravenese deserves accolades for
working a Holocaust lesson into a
mainstream Hollywood movie aimed
at teenagers.

The Joel Rubin Ensemble: Midnight
Prayer (Traditional Crossroads).
Like the Budowitz set, this is Old
World-style klezmer, with Rubin's clar-
inet providing the main voice and the
presence of trumpeter Ferenc Kovacs
adding a little more heft. The set has a
delightfully jaunty feel to its klezmer
numbers, while the other musical
source of the recording, Chasidic nig-
gunim, provides a soul-wrenching
counterpoint.

Old-line klezmer wasn't as much of an
improviser's art as, say, jazz, but con-
temporary new klez is much more so.
And that means that a live set like this
new one from the Metros is welcome.
The band swings hard, everyone has
ample solo room and plenty to say. In

This dazzling new recording is a
distinct change of pace from what I
usually hear. The songs, in Yiddish,
are all originals, composed by Polina
Shepherd and sung by Shepherd
and a quartet that includes her and
husband Merlin Shepherd (who also
contributes memorably on reeds and
guitar), Yana Ovrutskaya and Evgenya
Slavina. This is elegant chamber
music that dances nimbly from post-
modern a cappella to jazz to art song
