Aids To Parenting
To give parents of pre-teens and teens
(grades 6-10) the tools to navigate
their children's adolescence, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Alliance for Jewish Education has
launched a pilot program
Funded and supported through the
Stephen H. Schulman Millennium
Fund and the Alliance's Youth
Professional Committee, "Please Stop
the Rollercoaster: How Parents of
Teenagers Can Smooth out the Ride"
follows a curriculum developed by Sue
Blaney, author of the book by the same
title. The overall program for parents
is staffed by Lisa Soble Siegmann
of Federation's Alliance and Ellen
Yashinsky Chute of Jewish Family
Service of Metropolitan Detroit.
In eight sessions, using Jewish text
and study partners, the program will
explore issues of adolescent develop-
ment, self-esteem, social pressures,
risk behavior, parental roles and
changing relationships.
The cost is $36 for all eight sessions.
Karen Alpiner serves as chair of the
Youth Professional Committee, which
created this opportunity.

Israeli Movie Series
Innovative Israeli films will be shown
as part of the Kollel Torah Mitzion
film series, beginning Jan. 5.
The series will feature critically
acclaimed movies produced through
the Jerusalem-based Ma'ale School of
Television, Film and the Arts.
The first two films, Cheftzi on the
Air and The Orthodox Way, will be
featured at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5,
at Young Israel of Southfield, 27705
Lahser Road.
The second two films, Elyokim and
A Pure Prayer, will be shown at 8:30
p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Young Israel of
Oak Park, 15140 W. 10 Mile.
The Ma'ale School combines reli-
gious studies with art; Jewish texts
and Torah learning with cinematic
theory; social issues with Jewish cul-
ture and media courses.
The film series is sponsored by the
Kollel Torah MiTzion, established for
the study of Torah and to promulgate
the connection between Torah and
Israel.
Detroit KTM, in its ninth year, is
led by Rosh Kollel Rabbi Bezalel and
Ayelet Safra and Michael Greenbaum,
president. Members include Rabbi
Ze'ev and Ronya Friedlander, Naftali
Friedman, and Yuval Kroper.
There is a $10 charge per evening
for movie tickets, and sponsorship
opportunities are available. Light
refreshments will be served.

Art Enrichment Grant
Jewish Apartments and Services in
Oak Park received a $6,700 grant
from the Detroit-based Community
Foundation for Southeast Michigan
as part of the organization's fourth-
quarter grants to nonprofit organiza-
tions working to improve the quality
of life in the seven-county region and
beyond. JAS will use the grant to sup-
port a comprehensive art enrichment
program.
