0 Dear
B alr,*EVery
year I make
my food and
health-related
resolutions for
the new year and every year I seem
to fall a little short. Any tips/sug-
gestions? Thanks, Jim.
answer: Dear Jim, Here are
some of the tips/sugges-
11‘ _tions that I believe have the
best likelihood of success when it
comes to behavioral changes:
• Know why you want to change
and focus on the benefits that
positive change will bring (e.g.,
a longer, healthier life; more
quality time with your friends,
family, etc.);
• Be honest with yourself—
make sure that you have a
real commitment to change
), -N
and a basic understanding
of what it takes;
• Be realistic—don't al-
cl . )
low perfection to be the
enemy of the good— set
incremental goals that
are achievable;
• Have a plan, have a
plan, have a plan—you'll
have a much greater likeli-
hood of success, if you have
your own, well-thought-out road
map of how to get there;
• Practice your new behaviors
regularly and take pleasure/joy in
even modest successes;
• Be patient—don't beat your-
self up because of temporary
setbacks—get right back on your
path again;
• See yourself being successful.
