how his men should treat detainees.
The captain posed what he called
the most important question that
his generation will face — "Do we
sacrifice our ideals in order to pre-
serve security?" — and concluded
that he "would rather die fighting
than give up even the smallest part
of that idea that is America."
We must live up to our own stan-
dards, the rule of law that defines
the "idea" that is America. America
must always strive to be the shining
city on the hill of which President
Reagan spoke. But today that sheen
is gone in the eyes of much of the
world.
By understanding the strength
that comes when we live up to our
ideals, we can regain that luster.
And when, as that veteran in that
V.A. hospital in Michigan urged,
we win back the respect of people
around the world for America, we
will make the lives of our children
and grandchildren and our beloved
nation more secure.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Nabil Abu Rdeneh, a spokes-
man for Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas, said last week
that the Israeli "policy of escala-
tion" aims to sabotage and place
obstacles before the [Israeli-
Palestinian peace] negotiations.

No matter what the size of your
gift, with your help we can do
more. Israel's National Insurance
Institute reports that 1 out of 5
households lives on or below
the poverty line, and that one
out of three children, below the
age of 18 live in poverty.

As hard as it is to imagine children going to bed hungry in
Israel, it's a fact of life; one third of the children across the
nation now live on or below the poverty line. In response,
our community is working with agencies and schools in
Federation's Partnership 2000 region of the Central Galilee
to provide thousands of children the benefit of an extended
school day program where hot lunches are served. For many
of these children, this is their one balanced meal of the day.

In ways you may never know or predict, your gift to the
Jewish Federation adds strength to our family in Israel.
Turning risk into possibility for families in crisis,
Federation dollars go where funds are needed most,
to rebuild communities and break the cycle of poverty.

When you give, you give more than money. You give hope.

The Answer
Israel's military actions in Gaza
are meant to stop the firing of
terrorist missiles that wound or
kill innocent men, women and
children in Israeli cities. Israel is
committed to the current peace
process but, at the same time,
will not sacrifice its citizens'
security.
