"Mideast Skeptic” ( Dec. 6, page
A20), detailing the beliefs of Jonathan
Schanzer, shows why a peaceful settle-
ment is fraught with obstacles.
Mr. Schanzer, of the Jewish Policy
Center in Washington, apparently
agrees with Georges Clemenceau, the
prime minister of France during the
failed Versailles Treaty negotiations,
who said, "Force is right."
Mr. Schanzer's position that Israel
must have another "crushing victory"
in order to change the landscape of the
Mideast is absurd in its justification of
war as the resolution to conflict.
Only a political solution can lead
to a lasting peace. Only when the U.S.
and others come to the peace table as
"honest brokers" will the parties be
moved. Only full-faith negotiations
and not war can bring a lasting peace.

Real Efficiency

Returning to Michigan for the
Thanksgiving holidays, I had the
opportunity to pick up a copy of the
Jewish News and was drawn to the
cover story "Eco Living" (Nov. 22, C2).
First of all, kudos to the couple and
their architect for an extensive effort
in making their home site as environ-
mentally friendly as possible.
However, my understanding of
conservancy and the Judaic traditions
of husbandry and environmental
responsibility incorporate the concepts
of sustainability (and proportional-
ity). The average size house in the
USA is approximately 2,400 square
feet; the mean size house for a family
of four is closer to 1,500 square feet.
Smaller houses are more efficiently
cooled heated and lit. A 7,200 square-
foot house, not including a 3-plus-car
garage and other outside appurte-
nances, would have great difficulty
meeting any standard of efficient use

of materials or energy for the number
of people likely to be living in it!
The other side of the coin to design,
of course, is the discipline of everyday
living: the turning off of lights, closing
off of vents when away, composting of
food waste, recycling, proportionate
use of electricity, gas, water, etc., are
equally important as well as re-think-
ing transportation needs. I hope there
are as many bicycles in the garage as
energy-efficient vehicles.

Biblical Comparison

In the Book of Judges, when Deborah,
the prophetess and judge, called upon
Barak, the military leader, to fight the
Canaanites, he had one condition: only
if you will go with me.
The commentators explain that
because of the moral authority of
Deborah, Barak felt that her joining
him in battle was imperative.
Well, when thinking of this for-
midable biblical pair who together
vanquished a bitter enemy, I can't
avoid making a comparison to U.S.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., a sort of
Deborah, a formidable and powerful
woman, and the extremely intelligent
and likeable yet woefully inexperi-
enced Barack Obama, D-Ill. Barak and
Barack are pronounced the same; the
Hebrew meaning is lightning, which
amazingly alludes to the swift ascent
of the Illinois senator to prominence.
If joining forces, this pair could be
a force to reckon with in the battle
that is raging for the Democratic
nomination for president. Would the
two leading Democratic rivals take a
page from their biblical almost-paral-
lels and declare that if one of them is
nominated, the the other will be his or
her running mate? This is definitely
something to think about.

MERE 'cha Don't Know

Where is there a Jewish neighborhood wherein two streets
are purposely named the equivalent of the word "nobody,"
and what is the Detroit connection to this story?
