nswer (continued from
at time): Dear Pamela,
aegarding the epidemic
of childhood obesity, the question
naturally arises, "What can be
done about it?"
First, the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) states that the goal
for overweight children and teens
is to reduce the rate of weight gain
while allowing normal growth
and development. Children and
teens should NOT be placed
on a weight reduction diet
without the consultation of
..,\ a health care provider.
t ,?... . ) ' With that in mind, the
CDC offers the following
sensible action steps for
parents and guardians:
(1) Encourage healthy
eating habits by provid-
ing/encouraging: (a).
plenty of fruits, veg-
etables, and whole grain
products; (b) low or non-fat
dairy products; (c) lean meats,
poultry, fish, lentils, and beans
for protein; (d) reasonably-
sized portions; (e) drinking lots
of water; and (f) limiting sugar
and saturated fat intake.
(2) Look for ways to make favorite
dishes healthier.
(3) Avoid calorie-rich temptations;
(4) Help kids stay active—reduce
sedentary time.
I hope this helps.
